O.K. I'll start...Hey Ernie have you fixed your 348 gas tank yet?
LOL! Why as a matter of fact smartass I have. I took it and FINALLY found a guy that was willing to weld it up. He basically cut it open, pulled out the broken off baffles, then welded it back up, and fix the crap ass spot welds. The welder told me that by the looks of the spot welds on the tank they had the welder set too hot. So as a result the aluminum got pitted where the spot welds were. Then because of the weak welds it was easier for the baffles to pop out. The other thing was the gas in the tank getting heated up from ambient heat of the engine causing the tank to expand, and helping to accelerate the baffles popping out of the welds. So now the tank is ready to go..........however...... I'm waiting for the parts I ordered from Ricambi to show up, so I can finish rebuilding the fuel pumps. And yes I took pictures and will be posting a how to thread.
O.K.... Busting Ernie's chops part 2. Who wants to bet me a bar b que lunch at Hess park (A great place to grill a lunch with good parking) that Ernie's 348 will not be drivable before Martin Luther King's B-day??? I am confident I will win. I like grilled chicken on sesame seed bun and kettle potato chips with a coke.
I would not take that bet. Come on Ernie, invite us Stooges up there and we'll do it all in a day. I figure I'm not doing anything during the Christmas holiday. Bruce won't have the race car so he's dying for something to do!
Oh? Did ol' Bruce finally sell it? As for your goofs coming up here, wee can have a Stooge-fest in a couple of weeks. I have to save up enough money to feed the fatman.
Ernie ............. we know the tank is done ............. now what klind of luck are you having finding the rubber fuel pump seals?? ............ is this going to take another year or so to save a 'couple hundred bucks' ................
I'm off X-mas too lets do it! Bar B Que at Ernie's. So what's up with Bruce and the racecar? Should the thread be renamed..."let's bust Bruce's chops for not driving the racecar on the track?" He I got enough smack for everybody...who want's it next? I feel cocky now that I have a running Ferrari...at least for now.
Check with RD or Dave helms. Both know about all the problems with new fuels and Ferrari rubber. On another thread in the 550 section RD was talking about new seals of a different rubber from Ferrari. It may bare looking into or ask Daniel, I'm sure he is up on all this. Otherwise I say lets jam a toilet bowl wax ring on that sucker and just get it driving.
Bruce needs to tell the tale, but race car is sold to a great buyer with delivery scheduled for this week, I believe. He's been at the guy's shop living mechanic heaven. Sorry FBB, but this shop is too absolutely die for! I'm trying to get an invite down there (behind the Orange curtain). Something about a 2000 Ferrari F1 race car... But regarding ernie, yessir I'm in for the great Get-Ernie's-Car-On-The-Road-So-His-Long-Suffering-Wife-Will-Get-Off-His-Azz-BBQ.
Hey...I never met Ernie's wife but she must be awesome to put up with him. So what do you all say we take Ernie's wife out to lunch and leave Ernie in the garage to work on his car? I think I'm going to get another Smart A$$ comment from you know who....
Oh you guys are just to funny. I ordered the parts from Daniel-san and they are on the way here via the pony express. I did spend about a week searching for an alternative, but after I talked to Bosch, and was told that they only supply the part and not the rubber seal, I went ahead and called up Daniel-san. Actually I talked to David-san first, then Mikey-likes-it, and THEN Dan the man. There are two different pumps that came in the 348, so there are two different rubber sleeve part numbers. Dan and I had to figure out what pump got what sleeve. The parts book doesn't tell you what sleeve fits according to the manufactures part number, only by the Ferrari number. Which is so stupid, but then again we are talking about Ferrari logic here so why would I be surprised.
Where in the dickens did you come up with this phrase? When you get done sorting this one will the gas cap be the only untouched item? Sounds like a ground up restoration worthy of a Factory "C" certification. Dave
Yeah, that is a bit of an oxymoron isn't it. As for the gas cap. Yeah that is the only thing left to replace. It was mentioned to me that the reason the tank could have been expanding is because the cap isn't venting. I was told that the 360 caps are vented. But what I don't get is, here in California when you go to get your smog check done one of the things they check is if the gas cap holds pressure. The emissions test here is so strict that they don't even want the fumes from the gas cap getting into the atmosphere. So if the cap was vented that seems to defeat the purpose. All of my vehicles have a release hiss when opening up the gas cap, especially during the summer. So they are all experiencing some sort of expansion of the gas in the tank, yet none of them have sprung a leak. I have an Integra that, is the same age as my 348, I have almost 311,000 miles on and it does the pressure release hiss all the time when I open the cap, no leaking gas tank. Then my Expedition has 250,000 miles on it, and no leaks either. LOL, yeah I know I put a lot of miles on my cars. I would be putting a ton of miles on my 348 if the stupid car would break down all the time. I think it's just piss poor spot welds used by Ferrari, or who ever Ferrari contracted, to cut the cost of making nice welded seems.
Alright suckers. I just finished posting a thread in the technical section on how to tear down a 348 fuel pump. Oh Shemp, don't forget to add that to the primer page. And you still haven't added the tank removal thread I posted a while back.
Yeah but does the car roll on its own power yet????? Man I better brush up on my BJJ I think I feel a "choke" coming on.
