Which previously-respectable and good bands pulled a Fonz and when?

    Van Halen--Jump
Red Hot Chili Peppers--Under the Bridge
    Smashing Pumpkins--1979

    Who else?

I can't really agree with any of the songs you chose as their shark moment, but they all definitely have jumped at this point. RHCP defintely jumped when they were in "The Chase" with Charlie Sheen.

I have a few of my own.

    Aerosmith: Livin on the Edge
Motley Crue: Home Sweet Home (but they had a few good ones after that)
    Tom Jones: Kiss (Prince remake)

I actually liked Under the Bridge, but it launched them down that formulaic path, and they went soft afterwards. With VH, the moment they brought the synthesizer into the studio, they changed forever. 1984 was a great album, but "Jump" changed them. And after watching the Pumpkins evolve locally, they're a shell of their former selves.

does "jumping the shark" in this scenario mean selling out, or pulling a publicity stunt?

The Who when they did "Squeeze Box".

Aerosmith when they did "Dude looks like a lady".

Elton John when he did "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with Kiki Dee.

Rod Stewart when he did "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".

Elvis Costello - pretty much everything he's done since "Allison".

Village People: the horrible movie Can't Stop the Music. Which is worse, singers that can't act or actors that can't sing?

Nine Inch Nails: We're In This Together. Jumped back breifly with Right Where It Belongs

    Korn: Word Up.

Alabama: Angels Among Us. Unless you are Pink Floyd, putting a children's chorus in a song automatically qualifies you for jumped status. Actually I can't stand Another Brick in the Wall II with the kids singing either.

Garth Brooks: Chris Gaines. Anything during or after Chris Gaines.

Check out the site jumptheshark.com. These guys were big Happy Days fans. One of the later episodes Aurthur Fonzirelli ski jumps a shark. It was at that moment they realized the show had peaked and would never be as good again. Set aside and hour to browse, you will find almost any old TV show you can think of listed there.

Jumping the shark is not the moment that the show/group was at its greatest, rather it indicates when it is obvious that it has peaked to the observers and is now in obvious decline, usually some time after the actual peak.

"Jump the Shark" refers to a "Happy Days" TV episode when Fonzie (Henry Winkler), wearing swim trunks and his trademark leather jacket, jumps over a penned-in shark while water skiing. It is considered the turning point of that TV show becoming silly and not worth watching any more.

The term has become generalized to mean when something turned bad.

In this context, I'm thinking about a specific song or album that signified their turn from greatness to "eh".

Jump was the best selling single Van Halen ever had and made them more money than all other singles they had, combined.

"Jump" was at an odd time, but I would not say they jumped the shark. That was not until Van Hagar era.

U2, after the Joshua Tree album it was down hill. Not that everything after that was bad, it just wasn't great.
Duran Duran, after Seven And The Ragged Tiger album.

William Hung was never good....he could never have even had a Shark to jump....

And to be honest I actually LIKED William Shatner's last album "Has Been". It was mostly written by him, and was produced by Ben Folds. I actually BOUGHT it! :p

Here's a link to one of the songs off the album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr3dkWbfVd4

I don't like RHCP, but I have always liked Under The Bridge.

I wouldn't say SP ever "jumped the shark". They've always had a sound that's been all their own.

I've never gotten the grudge against Motley for writing Home Sweet Home. It's one of their best songs, imo. The only problem that song created was other bands feeling they had to have a ballad.

Linkin Park, I would say a very very sharp decline after Hybrid Theory. Completely off the wall after Meteora.

As for RHCP, I'm not sure they ever jumped the shark. I think the changes in their sound have been more influenced by life and maturity than "selling out". Hard to be a rock/funk/ska fusion band in your 40s.
