System vents through the charcoal canister on both this and the 360. No cap venting

    Right on Dave, thanks.

I kinda figured that, because other wise what's the point of the stupid charcoal canister. So now I'm just gonna have to figure out out to test the purge valves. But I think they are fine because I haven't gotten a CEL for them. If there is one thing about the Motronics they WILL through a light for the slightest indication of something wrong.

Not on the 348 fuel system. The first to test, verify and throw CEL's on this was the 360, quite a common issue on those. The 355 had a fault code for leakage but I havent seen it for years and cant remember the failure mode right now.

Pressurize the fuel system (USE NITROGEN! No need to pump oxygen in there and build a bomb) to a max of 2 psi and if all is good with the purge valves you will hear they start to chatter when they vent to the canister. I suspect something might not be right as I have only seen tanks fail when the venting is inop or restricted.

Do follow Dave's advice and try to get the system working and do not be tempted to be a stooge and remove it. I can vouch for the good design and importance of an intact Ferrari OEM system after being upside down in my racecar and not having 1 drop of fuel leak that could have resulted in a nice car-be-que. The system may not look so good but it does work.

    Thanks again Dave,

The 348 Motronic 2.7 does have a code for the purge valve, it's 1124. I don't know if it's the same for the 355, but that's what I have it listed as in my shop manual. Even though I haven't ever gotten a CEL light for the purge valve I'll look into getting them tested.

Hey Fasto, didn't you save you have a tank of nitrogen handy?

Yes but my regulator goes down that low. IIRC it starts at 20psi. There is 2000lbs behind that valve. I run airtools, airjacks and air up tires with it.

Find someone with an Emissions System smoke machine, one handy but expensive tester. Before they came out I used a radiator pressure tester tapped to a gas cap. No visual help that the smoke offers but useful to answer the question none the less.

Funny how those of us that are members of the "Inverted once Club" become fanatical about these small things..... cant agree enough with Fatso here!

    Ernie,

I do have a cooling system pressure tester we could pump up air into your system and it is like 0-20psi per Dave's suggestion.

    Dave,

LOL! I think you could have the name to my new race team..."inverted once racing" I like that.

I look back to some of the photo's my father took while I was on the pre grid a lifetime ago..... nape of the neck height roll bars in open cars, old pcv valve borrowed from the tow car for a fuel tank check valve.... Some were using exhaust tubing for cages to save 50#'s, denting it and welding up the dent area and then drilling the wall thickness inspection through the weld... Wasn't my time I guess.

My first race after designing and building a proper top fuel dragster looking cage in an old TR-3 and I was sent off turn one at Donnybrooke backwards at terminal speed and the cage was field tested. Never was competitive after that and didn't make many friends when pushing for safety in the club as a tech inspector, I worked on too many of my fellow competitors cars and knew too much. Early the next season two cars went inverted....nothing but a heart felt smile from the driver, lotsa of hugs from their wife's.

I like the team name! Displayed properly on the rear of the car might have a negitive effect on a driver considering overtaking you in a turn. Nothing says do you really want to try that like "Been there, Done that"!

Gee Dave...I'm the chicken little in my club too. When I talk about the need for right side nets, HANS and seats attached to the rollcage people start arriving with buckets of "Tar and Feathers."
