my take is that 25 years is 3 decades eg, the 60s/70s/80s. If you start in 1968, add 25 years and you are in your third decade. Oh, I started in 68 so this is my 5th decade working on cars!!!

Oh, and thanks for the heads up about Daniel being able to fix me up and the limitations of my ST05, I had no idea, duh!!!

The quote, "in the last three decades", does not state that I have been a automotive tech for three decades, if that were the case, I would have just stated (for three decades)...

If you read my prior post you will observe that I have been employed as an automotive tech for 27 years and as a professional mechanic for 3 decades. The first three of those of those 30 years were not automotive related, so I don't count them towards my automotive experience.

So, one more time, what was it that you do for a profession and how long have you been employed at it???

Guy- Your Prozac must be wearing off. "In the last three decades.." is not the same as "for three decades". Twenty-one years qualifies as working in the last three decades.

I hate it when guys beat up the pros that help us amateurs so much. Do you have an on-going feud that I, as a newbie, do not know about? You have been very argumentative and unpleasant. Smiley faces do not change that.

No need for the plug now, because you already plugged ;D (nothing wrong with backing up your favorite tech.)

Ferrari actions = Ferrari credentials. Some have them, some don't.

Words are just words without the credentials to back them.

 

My dealer (Continental) just announced hiring a new tech. He graduated #1 in his class at UTI. Now he's got to pass 3 months of training at Ferrari of North America. After that, he'll be building and learning how to service the new California for at least another three months in Maranello. After that, he will begin the dealer training to enable him to work on customer cars. All banter from before aside - I can't think of a better training for a tech than that.

 

The course for the California is THREE MONTHS LONG??!!! Jeez, that's the longest Ferrari technical course EVER!

 

Ok so back to the communication protocall and SD machines. I have had an interface module for the OBD2 connector/usb port from Innovative Motorsports. It's been on the market for maybe two years and they still can't get it to work as advertised. Turns out there are something like five different communication protocalls in CAN and then there are manufacturer specific codes. Unfortunately, my genius nephew who graduated two years early from the Univ. of Wash. computer science program is on a mission in Austrailia for two years......what a waste of talent. I would like to bribe him any gear he needs to crack open these devices. And I think the solution involves open source software so everyone gets something and maybe some can contribute to the greater good. Anyway, kids stop *****ing about who has more skill or 25 years or 30 years. And even one dollar from FNA's pocket is a good thing. YMMV.

FWIW, I remember a conversation I had with the oh-so-talented Aaron White (aka Mr. FerrariChat) a few years ago when he boasted that he cracked the software and ported it to a iPaq. I called him on the bluff and offered him a tidy sum to put-up-or-shut up. Guess what happened?


I will offer that very few people, if any, will loan you a massively expensive and quite rare SD3 for reverse engineering. Ferrari SpA and Digitek SpA would almost assuredly sue you to kingdom-come if you publish the software through reverse engineering.

 

I'm not a lawyer, but I think they could only sue you if you "extracted" the software from the SD3 and fiddled around with it. No one can prevent you from writing your own software and building your own hardware that you plug into the car.

Almost two years ago I used the St05 to plot data in Excel, I used an USB connection and downloaded the data to a laptop. I am pretty sure the shop was bleeding an F1 pump at the time. The screen is small and monochromatic and not all that impressive looking.

The SD3 sure looks sweet

 

The screen on the SD3 looks like crisp pc/laptop resolution.

 

That is a cool piece of equip. Should yield many returns I agree.

 

In the USA, anyone can sue anyone for anything. Winning is another matter, but it doesn't change the fact that you need to defend it.
