Last winter I run a credit check on myself, I find one eroneous open account from a hospital in a town I have never been to. Immediately call the accounts department at the facility and learn some guy six years ago had a few hundred in bills racked up: different name and birthdate but using my Social Security number. I explain who I am and that I was not born in '57, IIRC faxed over a copy of my driver's license to prove this to her. She says no problem I will take care of it, and seemed very willing to help. I call back a week later and she says it is done and will not ding my credit any longer. In hindsight I should have insisted on receiving copies of the letter she was going to write to the agencies removing the issue. My bad.

So today, 10 months later, I get a letter to my address in his name from a collection agency stating that I have 30 days to respond. I intend to call them during business hours, as well as the hospital and attempt to clear it up once again. It more than pisses me off a little that now they have my address because I was the one who called them. Makes me want to track the deadbeat down myself for a little Texas Justice. But I digress...

Normally I wouldn't worry about something like this except it is my credit rating, which is spotless except for this load of BS. I have little faith in their competence to resolve it as well.

    Any suggestions?

contact the credit reporting agencies and a) have your account flagged (meaning credit cannot be opened without verification of who you are) and b) have a "consumer's statement" added to your reports detailing this incident.

as for the credit agency, you'll have to prove to them the fraud in order to get this to go away. probably sign an affidavit or something similar-this happened to my dad a few years back.

good luck! it's definitely a PITA.

Send a letter to the big three credit companies and have them freeze your credit... You can open it up again if and when you need it for a very specific amount of time but it keeps things like this from happening as when your credit is checked, they can't check it... I locked mine a few years ago, have used my secret pin to open it up once, then locked it down again. Once you lock it, the creditors can't touch it, nobody can without your pin.. At that point in time, you can tell the Hospital to go find the real people and to leave you alone as they can't do anything after that.

I thought I had is taken care of for a second time. Applied to refi this morning and bam it is still there. Another dispute and 30-45 days to get it resolved. It dinged my credit at least 50 points, but I can still get the best rates through this first lender I have talked to. When the second lender and current mortgage holder calls me, we will see if this fiasco has prevented me from refinancing for a few weeks.

The whole situation still makes you want to hurt somebody though.

Beware,....because it may not be what you ASSUME that it is. This exact same thing happened to me about 15 years ago. I was awakened by a telephone call from a hospital in Oklahoma saying that I owed them $800. I asked them what name and SSN they had on file and they read back MY name and number. I knew this was bogus. Long story short,....some guy with my same last name and FIRST initial had skipped out on his bill, so the hospital got in touch with a credit report service and simply had them pull up somebody with the same last name and first initial,....which just happened to be me,....and THAT is how they got my SSN. The hospital never had MY SSN on any of their original paperwork. I called the hospital back and said, "If you've got my SSN from the credit report then you obviously know my date of birth and that will obviously NOT match the records of your deadbeat patient." Sure enough, they checked and realized that I was not the guy they were looking for.

Bottom line,....nobody "stole" my SSN and I doubt that anybody "stole" your's either. They probably just got the wrong name from some credit report agency.

Meaning you can lock your credit report from companies that want to file a late payment and/or bad judgement?

I have a fairly common first and last name, and have received calls from collection agencies fishing to see if they can "catch" their deadbeat. Those calls don't bother me unless the jackoff on the other end has an attitude of "you did this, you did that, blah blah..."

This one was completely different. He used his own name and birthdate with my SSN. in talking with the medical facility, I asked them to pull the original paperwork that he filled out six years ago and make sure they didn't key in the SSN incorrectly. They have been too lazy to get it so far. Called back to my contact there today and left a message that it would definitely be in her best interest to call me back. After 10 months and many phone calls, this remaining on my credit shows negligence at the very least on their part.

So I have disputed the collection on my credit report (again) and we will see how it is resolved in the next 30-45 days.

I had it happen to me.

Supposed debts are eventually sold to collection agencies if the debt is a small one. I received dunning letters for years for a debt that wasn't mine. Each time I contacted the collection agency and asked them to provide proof, which never came. A couple of years later, apparently another agency bought the 'debt' and again I requested proof. This went on through a number of agencies and finally, I haven't been bothered in about 6 years.

By the way, none of this appeared on any of my credit reports. Just ask for proof; i.e. something with your signature etc. If they can't provide it, they can't prove it!

That sucks. My wife had someone steal her credit card number online and it took some time to straighten out.

No you cannot do that. All a lock does is keep people from looking at the report, not reporting to it.
