  1. Between the Wynn, Encore (opens December 22nd), and Palazzo what do you guys think? The Wynn and Palazzo are the same price pretty much. The Palazzo rooms look really decent. Has anyone stayed at the Wynn/Palazzo If so how do they compare?

I have not stayed at either, but it's funny you mention the word Pricey in the same sentence as hotels in Vegas! The hotel casino's are getting clobbered. I get at least two emails per week from the Luxor advertising $69 rooms. That's $200 off their best price a year ago and their rooms are VERY nice. Vegas is doing EVERYTHING they can to get visitors and you are the boss when it comes to a room rate.

I didn't mention they were pricy. I don't think Vegas holds a candle to NYC prices ($1099 for a standard 720 sq/ft room at the Mandarin Oriental). I was just pointing out that the Wynn and Palazzo are the same price, I was curious to see which ones were more favorable by those that have been there.

As for Vegas - definitely. I can see how they're getting hit hard. I've noticed more specials on rooms and overall cheaper rooms at some of the top hotels.

MGM has really nice rooms. I haven't stayed at the Wynn or Palazzo so I can't comment there.

Stayed @ most of the hotels in Vegas... haven't stayed @ Wynn though.

Palazzo is nice. I am not sure it's nice *enough* to justify the prices.

I stayed @ Excalibur once... kinda crappy. But the thing that made it crappy was really just that it needed redecorated. It was old-looking. Stayed @ MGM, Rio, Ceasars, Bellagio, Luxor, Venetian, TI, and others. Personally I like the Rio best. All the rooms are suites with great views. The Venetian and Bellagio have nicer rooms, but comparing a standard room between hotels, what makes the Venetian "nicer"? It's the same size. The quality of the fittings is slightly better... but it's not like you're getting a suite with a marble floor and 65" flat panel TV in the Venetian either... if you want that, you can get it at any hotel.

If you are getting a room there, remember they are being hammered with the economy. Be sure to bribe the desk attendant for a better room. No, I am not kidding! Put a $100 bill (or $50 or whatever you want) folded under your license when they ask for it and just push it forward and when they see it say "are there any complimentary upgrades available". Check the rooms out online because they will likely ask what you want... so you need to know enough to say "A deluxe suite" (or whatever the rooms are called). The desk agents have a lot of latitude to grant this request, and the money makes it likely to happen. About an 80% chance of success. Gotta be reasonable with the $$$ though... if you're staying for 5 days in a $100/night room, and a suite is $300/night, you're basically asking for $1000 worth of freebie... so a $20 ain't gonna cut it... but you could drop a c-note on it and still come out $900 ahead.

At the last minute two years ago, I had to go to Vegas for a night. The city was packed and I was lucky to get a room at Circus Circus (I called everywhere). Expecting a room that was a real dump ($79 a night), I was placed in a fairly decent room that beat any expectations I had! It was clean, the furnishings were almost brand new and the room service was about as fast as fast could get! Coupled with winning about $1200 on a Wheel of Fortune machine before I sacked out, I'd have no problem staying there again.

As a side note: What I HATE about Vegas in general is the snootyness of the gaming floors [at most casino's]. If you play Blackjack in Reno or Tahoe, the pace is fairly friendly. In Vegas, at the time you pick up your cards deciding how you want to bet, the dealer is in your face with that demamding look like you are holding up the whole show!

I usually stay at Bellagio. I find it equal to the Wynn as far as comfort.

If Im slumming it either Planet Hollywood or MGM.

I tried Flamingo once just for the cheap rate...never again. I stepped in Excaliber once...I lasted about 5 minutes with the kids running around everywhere.

While my place in LV was being built, I stayed at several hotels, including Wynn. I haven't been in Encore yet but I have heard its very nice -- better than the original Wynn.

Wynn has good rooms with very good beds/sheets, creature comfort, service, an interesting casino layout, a great upscale attitude, and the best Buffet in LV.

I like the suite rooms at Venetian if you're staying with friends. I think the Venetian has apples to apples the largest square footage per room. But, it can be a bit of a walk to get to from the front door/ casino to them.

To me, I thought the MGM was just OK. The towers seemed a bit cheap to me. The place is just huge.

Luxor is cheap and somehow interesting but I would not be overly excited to go there aside from the novetly of slanted windows and elevators and a view into the lobby that would scare most people "s"-less.

The Hilton is just a basic hotel stay. Basic accomidations but close to the convention center.

The Mirage is a fine former Steve Wynn creation.

Caesars has a new tower but I have not been there. The shops and restaurants at the forum are great and usually crowded.

My personal favorite: Mandalay Bay. The suites are sexy and during the summers the girls walk around the lobby in bikinis. It has a wave motion beach. I've not stayed off strip at either the Palms or Rio but Mandalay is still a really nice place for me.

The place to stay away from: The Tropicanna. I'm personally not a fan of Excalibur.

If you want to see a modern version of Soddam and Gamorrah, go to Rehab on Sundays during the summer at the pool at Hard Rock. The rooms are pretty lame but the action at the pool is something to behold. They are building a new Hard Rock hotel so maybe the hotel will finally live up to the cool rock and roll attitude.

What to look out for in the near future: Fountainbleu on the north end of the strip should be finished the end of next year. It should be really impressive. CityCenter is under construction and when finished, may be the Taj Mahal of all Casino hotels. It's beyond enormous.

If you want something really nice, go for the skylofts. Been there each time while in Vegas, it's really great.

Who has done the rides atop the Stratosphere? I have been to Vegas seven or eight times since this hotel -casino was completed and have never visited it. I have been reading a lot on the building of this massive tower and find it quite interesting. Aside from the rides, what's the general poop about the place? Can anyone just take a ride up to the top? Do you have to have either a room or restaurant reservation to go up? Is the place beyond cool and a must see on every trip or just another Vegas novelty tourist trap in which the buzz gave way to the next newest hotel that was built?

Anyone can ride. The restaurant is above average (not Picaso or Alize) with great views of the strip, mountains and downtown LV. Can't comment on the hotel or casino.

I don't want to make another thread, so can someone give some suggestions as to what to do in Vegas? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I'm going there for 6 days (UFC and New Years), and after I lose all my money the first night, I just want to relax and take in as much of the town as I can. Are there any must-see, must-do things?

    Thanks in advance.

You'll get a lot that should chime in here. that plus your share of Googling with the same question, you will be pretty busy! I'll give you one*: Plan a day to rent a car (Basic to exotic) and drive out to Hoover Damn (about an hour). Take the tour down into the damn and the general walk at their visitor center. It's quite the experience. You can also charter a chopper ride into the canyon.

*If you like to gamble, either bring more cash or save your money for the LAST night you are there. There is nothing worse than being in a casino (for more than an hour) without any cash!

I play poker, and I know a lot of the casinos have cheap tournaments during the day, so I'll probably play a few of those. Other than poker, I don't really gamble. I'll play blackjack once in a while, but I prefer doing that in the evening, after I've had a couple of drinks (makes losing a little easier haha). With regards to renting a car, not going to happen. Last I checked, it's cold and snowy in Vegas, and I've literally never driven in the snow so...

Thanks for the suggestions! Keep em coming...

The Rio is nice and i like Michael Gaughan's Gold Coast, they offer free shuttles every 20 minutes to their Hotels / Casinos, which will take you all over the strip even if you're not going to their casinos. Also, my wife did the rides atop the Stratosphere, there's a roller coaster and a ''space shot'' that launches you straight up in the air with no notice. She said it was a rush! Not for me!

Also, get a cab. Walking out of Harrah's one night, Melodie said "Let's walk to the Rio, it's right there (Pointing to the big blue building across the street). Ya, right...It was an hour and fifteen minute walk at 102oF!

My brother told me that The Gambles Store ( http://www.gamblersgeneralstore.com ) is REALLY a fun shop to visit.
