looks great man! I definitely would like a set. any plans to make carbon fiber covers down the road after R&D has been completed? that would be awesome and blow the Gruppe M one out of the water (looks wise)IMO

Are you going to test it with a stock exhaust system also?

I'd be interested to see any gains attributed to the Goth Speed covers alone.

    ..... :)

That was part of the inspiration! I noticed the 2.7 had full cross-sectional area access into the 'tall end' of the air box ............ where the 5.2 drew from the squashed end :( .......... I have not seen a 2.7 air box from the inside to see if there could be any flow improvements made  ............ if you or anyone could post a pic of the 2.7 inside top cover, that would be great :)!

That is the plan ...... ;) ........... to achieve similar performance at a much lower cost ...... and make it look like it belongs in a 355 ........ as well as give the owner the option to use readily available stock paper filters or a higher flow equivalent such as K&Ns or BMCs........... :D .......

the nero powdercoated alloy versions are the way they will be made as of now ......... but if there is enough interest ....... I will indeed make a composite version ....... CF and/or fiberglass ......... ;)

I was not planning on it but I guess it would be interesting to see how it works with a stock 'restrictive exhaust' .... ....... but since most guys looking for more flow have already changed their exhaust  .......... I was planning on running the 'gothspeed covers' when I get my 'monster new exhaust' completed and to the dyno ....... then I was going to dyno with the following configurations:

    1. completely stock intake w/stock paper air cleaners
    2. gothspeed covers w/stock paper air cleaners
    3. gothspeed covers w/K&N air cleaners

    :)

I think that's the only way to quantify performance enhancement of an individual piece.

Thing is the vast majority of 355 owners have not converted their exhaust system (I have replaced the headers only) and it seems this might be a very reasonable cost effective path to a bit more power, probably only noticeable at the higher end though.

It should be pretty easy to find a stock donor 355 in your area, I'd offer if I were closer.

    ......... thanks :)

......... my only reservation is the stock exhaust may not 'allow' enough flow to actually see the benefit of these covers ......... that being said ...... if the 'gruppeM CF intake' makes RWHP with stock exhaust then so should this! ........ :)

I have the stock exhaust on my F355 but it needs to be reassembled ...... I have it taken apart to get measurements for the new 355 exahsu system I have in the works ........

Thanks :)! ........... What exhaust are you running? .......... I am weighing feasability of reinstalling my exhaust specifically to dyno the 'gothspeed covers' ....... ;)

    First off, great work Goth!!!!

Just wondering, how did you measure the % flow increase? Was that some CFM change at a given pressure? I would think that intake restriction effect is proportional to rpm, so at low rpm maybe not much gain but you'll see more on top end? Dyno charts will tell...

As for the MAF, it should be fine as long as you don't max out the voltage. My modified STi is close, hitting around 4.8v and max is 5v. Of course with this Ferrari ECU we may never know how close we are to maxing out.

    Keep up the good work!

That's some great work, Goth! Whatever it takes to be on the "short list", 'specially for a CF version, I am all in!

It looks to me like the stock air box is designed to spread the incoming air evenly across the air filter, as opposed to allowing the maximum air in. If you look at the photo of the inlet tube taken from inside the air box, the inlet tube taper appears to mimic the taper of the aft end of the box. That box taper continues to rise toward the forward end of the box until it maxes out at about the 2/3 point. That more restrictive design may interfere with max flow, but it also likely reduces in-box turbulence.

Still, you would think that a 31% less restrictive flow would have to result in an increase in HP at the dyno, right? On the other hand, the dyno can’t accurately measure the effect of ram air because you are standing still. Please keep us posted when you get your exhaust back together. This is a very interesting experiment!

Oz, these look great! Very clean craftsmanship and much more fitting for the 355 5.2 engine bay than other aftermarket airboxes that I have seen.

My guess is 5-10 RWHP from stock to "Gothspeed" covers with K&N filter.

    Great work mate, congrats.

Thanks for the good words and positive feedback :)!!! The primary purpose of this project ......... is to unleash some HP with a clean looking intake, and not spend obscene money on a very expensive CF system currently out there ....... you guys have motivated me to put my stock exhaust together this week and try to dyno this weekend :D ......... the great thing about this mod, is I can change the test intake configurations on the same visit!!

If the stock tops are the 'biggest' restriction in the entire 355 intake, then the 'gothspeed tops' should have a big effect for the better :). Though I still have a hunch the fiber tubes that feed the air boxes from the side vents may contribute some restriction similar to the stock tops. But the logic behind this design, is if the gruppeM 355 intake makes HP drawing air from these same fiber tubes ....... then so should this :D!

It's official: Gothspeed is the only 348/355 Skunkworks recognized by the Stooges. :) You are to the Brotherhood what Lockheed is to the airforce. Um, OZ, can you please do something now with those lame-azzed 348 airboxes? BTW, on the 355 airboxes you did - UNFOOKINGBELEIVABLE!!!

Let me hazard a guess as to real performance gains - at the upper end of the RPM range, prolly about 2-3% or 6-8 RWHP. Even then, you cannot gauge real world gains since there is no way to test for ram air effect at rest. Wait, what about reaming the TBs abit? Of course, that's not with a Gothspeed 355 X-pipe by-pass delete cat-back muff system, nor the 360 headers retrofit. :)

I will go on record here as predicting well over 400 HP (say about 350 RWHP) with everything done.

    I'll give it a shot ...

    1. Baseline: 319 whp (375 hp * 85% ) - assumes a 15% drive line loss
    2. Mod 1: 338 whp (baseline + 6%)
    3. Mod 2: 338 whp (baseline + 6%) - assume K&N to be a worthless addition :)
    4. Mod 3 (Mod 1 + Gothexhaust): 351 whp (baseline + 10%)

I think you have Fabspeed headers so maybe my numbers will be a little off. :)

Those are big numbers to live up to speedy ......... ............... if the 'gothspeed tops' get even 3% gains I will be very happy :) ........... that will more than make up the power difference between the 2.7 and 5.2 355 versions ........... :D

I put my exhaust together last night and will be installing the intake today .......... I hope to be doing some 'seat of the pants' testing of the 'new intake tops' late at night .....

    My guesses:
    Baseline: 320
    Mod 1: 334 (Covers only)
    Mod 2: 335 (Covers + K&N)
Mod 3: 351 (Mod 2 plus GothMonster exhaust)

    Go Goth!
