I was showing a friend the F40 and you know how when you show someone a car there are some wicked fun highlights you enjoy point out...wheels this, carbon that....well, the heft of the rear bonnet is one of those "you wont believe this " kind of things. Seriously, what gives with that rear bonnet. im not sure if its ever been weighed, but why in the world is that thing that heavy??

the front bonnet feels light and airy, easily maneuvered, held in place by those two wire/straps. but you get around to that rear bonnet and its shockingly heavy to lift. i get sweat beads on my forehead every time i pop her open. and then i get a bit concerned/worried/unsure how long i'd really like to leave her in the up position on that collapsable rod pole (fyi a few guys up here recommended the proprods from that shop in pennsylvania...great product).

I mean for a street track car , you gotta know they wanted that thing as light as possible. there arent any major components back there. some air scoops and carbon stuff. nothing heavy duty from what i can tell.

i wonder if it actually was done to provide downforce? is that possible?
i wonder if it was done to meet certain government safety standards?
done for stiffness? maybe the material had to be thicker more durable due to heat shielding of engine?

its wild for sure. i have to get the proprod on my hip, its then like bench pressing 100lbs over your head, position the proprod, then relax a bit.

also, while im on the topic of the rear bonnet....how secure and sturdy/durable is that receptacle up on the bonnet below the plexiglass where you insert the end of that proprod/folding pole? i didnt really look too close, but is that made of carbon.? or some kind of alloy? I cant really tell how secure that is.,b ut it didnt overly impress me, and i dont think i'd want to leave that bonnet open with all tat heft on that receptable/pole for all that long.

inquiring minds wan tto know...any gurus out there have some insight??

I was also amazed at how heavy the engine bonnet on the F40 is, perhaps the weight is due to the the fact as you say of heat and perhaps if the material was two thin it could distort due to the high temps are when you lift the bonnet it would flex too much.

Some fantastic cars in the backround....

Big things generally weigh more than small things. Google "gravity" and you will find out more.

Clearly you are enjoying this car! I think you'll find that you're on the right track with your musings and the weight of the bonnet is a combination thereof of the issues you've surmised.

There are indeed heat-shielding panels in the rear hood that are absent in the front hood and of course they contribute to the weight. When you consider the mass and scope of the rear bonnet, the rear panel & light housings, the lexan 'breather' cover, the rear hood sub-frame to DOT-mandated impact standards, the heat-shielding to deal with the 'suzy haymaker' effect of the twin-turbocharged unit and all its associated plumbing, the massive rear wing unit etc, and you can see how the thing weighs a bit...

By the way the front hood has considerable weight too (although not as much as the rear), but the light units and bumper reinforcement etc is all along the leading edge, and when you open the unit it feels light as it is almost perfectly weighted by the pendulum effect of its mounting points up front. Therefore you never 'feel' most of the weight of the frontal unit and opening it is dead easy.

I like to man-up in a tight speedo before one-arming that rear bonnet!!

seriously, it aint the heft of the thing. any one of us could press it up no problem...the real problem is then how to get either the folding pop tent pole or the proprod in position so it stays open.

have u guys seen those Prorods from the company in PA? really nice product.. cost me about $225 or so, cheap money. painted red or black, i chose black, incorrectly i think. one solid piece. doesnt go with the car, but far more secure to hold open that back and the lowers rest on the center exhaust tip/pipe. apparently thats how they kept them open at the factory when finishing their build phase.

if anyone needs the info, let me know..or search herein for proprod.

fatnose is nice; rare; drives lights-out; easy to maintain; totally approachable. fits nicely in a parking spot, and when you drop the hammer on that thing, and that wastegate pops open, its like getting hit with a thunderbolt. a few o fmy cars go good...that car goes as well as any. not that electric insane lik ea CGT or the F40, but heavy duty torque and umph in a tight 911 package. end of day, the thing goes hard and well.
