Day 17 The door strakes have been stripped by hand. I have a hard time waxing them so can just imagine how hard it is to remove the paint. I always assumed they were heavy, but according to Al they are quite light and made from plastic. My headlights were very cloudy and looked horrible. I did consider getting new ones which are a lot of $$$$. Al said he'd look into it for me and managed to get them cleaned up. They look much better now. Very impressed. Here's a comparison picture and close ups of each light. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Cool your lights look fabulous ................ did he open them up ? ........... and who's 348 is this on the dyno ......? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWaoWoBh0fU
It was done by the same guy who removed the front and rear windscreens. He cut the lens off and also renewed the seals (just large 'O' rings) at the back of the lamps as he thought that's where the moisture may be getting in. From what I've been told it's a very specialist taskand this chap knows what he's doing. New lights cost around £500 for a pair, so I'm very happy.
Looks absolutely PERFECT!!! And big improvement with lights, do you know was your headlamp plastic "foggy" on outside or inside?
Day 18 Door strakes, lamp pods & lamp cover panels primed. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Man this is going to look good! What color will it turn into? I have a passion for NART blue Ferrari's with shields. oh add a curio interior wow!
great stuff Angelis : thanks for posting BTW on that rusted, corner spot. Ever think of making a drain hole in the rear underside for the future? AND, lastly, I just purchased a new/old set of side strakes that are Metal. Going to replace my plastice ones.... Didn't they ever make those 348's in metal too? rik
I did consider red at one point, but decided to stay with black. I then considered various types of mettalic black. Aston Martin do one with a red mettalic flake which looks really good. The jaguar mettalic black is also quite nice, but since I'm having the scuderia stripes painted mettalic silver, I've decided to keep the Ferrari nero mettalica as it has grey/silver mettalic flakes. Good idea. I'll ask Al to see what he thinks. I know the bumpers on mine are plastic, whilst the earlier ones are fiberglass. Could be that the strakes on the earlier ones are metal as well???
Day 19 Al says....... "Corrossion patches on luggage lid & engine lid bead blasted. Minor bit of panelbeating done on the luggage lid (a couple of high spots) & a light coat of filler to smooth them out. Both panels etched, primed & guide coated." Excellent stuff Angelis. I'm jealous. Wish I could find someone here in Cally that reasonable and through.
Day 20 Al says.......... "Begun blocking down the body (dry with 180 grade sandpaper on a 440mm sanding block). Roof done, outer rear buttresses done & upper horizontal body line done. The final 2 pics show the use of a fineline tape to make sure the edges/bodylines are made crisp & straight when sanding." End of January or early February. Ordered the new windscreen and rear screen last week (cost £3,300 !!!!) and just waiting for the Carbon sills from MaCarbon.
Day 21 Al says........... "The sills are prepped & primed, as are both bumpers & the luggage lid scoop cover. I've completed the blocking down of the high build primer, rear buttresses etc seem to have come out pretty well, so next step is to sort out the remaining imperfections & low spots & locally re-prime, then fully re-prime with a wet on wet primer." Looks like a very thorough job, Sy! Thanks for keeping us up-to-date with ongoing pics. Helps other owners with evaluating their own shops' work. I'd even take these pics to a shop when getting an estimate on a respray.
Wow!! Not cheap! Its going to look like a brand new car Sy!! You shall be right for another 20 yrs before its needs a respray.
Day 22 Al says.... "Doors off & minor stoppering (an ultra fine filler) done to remove any imperfections or irregularities in shape (a few at the base of the rear buttresses where most of the work was done). These areas re-primed & guide coated."
