Seems they were after the items in the car, not the car. I wouldn't rekey anything. Does the Ferrari stay in a garage? Sorry about the loss, must suck!!

Was there any information in your briefcase that would reveal the address of your new house? Rather than re-key the vehicle, you may want to get a shift gate lock (Ricambi sells one from Hill Engineering) and if there was no identifying information stolen I would feel confident parking it at a new residence, and using the shift gate lock when parked elsewhere, if I were in the same situation.

 

That sucks!!! Sorry to hear about that. Man that would be a hard decision, the fact that someone could just take your car later on down the road doesn't sit well... Any chance insurance will help if you get it re-keyed?

 

take the car to the dealer in service and think of something stupid like (I hear a rattle when I drive see if you can find it)so if the cars in the shop for say a month at no parking fee and its locked up in a safe place with good insurance,and then you don't have to worry about in in someone house or parking lot,what'll you think cool idea?

 

Add a hidden inline switch on the ignition feed from the keyed ignition. Sorry to hear about that! The perp deserves extended Chinese water torture, and sleep deprevation.

 

I would bet that the perp would be more interested in showing off his (or her) newly acquired conversation piece (the key and key chain) as opposed to looking forward to trying to steal the car. If the car is parked in a garage, they would have to gain access to that first. The nice thing is, most Ferraris I've had the pleasure of listening to have a built in OEM or Aftermarket alarm system - it's not exactly a car you can sneak out of a garage without someone taking notice if you know what I mean.

They would have to be really, really dumb to try to steal it. Afterall, they didn't hotwire and steal your daily driver. I would think that they would have tried that before breaking into a garage to steal a Ferrari. Then again, the world is full of stupid people.

CRUD, sorry lotusdude. I keep too much personal stuff in my portfolio too but no keys, just my identity. it doesn't help that some of my badges for my line of work require my SS# printed in bold print on the front of them.

Errr... Unless your friend lives next door or down the street. If the perp has a key I'm thinking they'll have a boner for anything they see in the area with a cavallino. Do you ever visit your friend in the 355?
Did I mention I can be a tad OCD and paranoid?

 

This is a risky idea, but maybe use the car as bait?

Park it in the drive way, have a few security cameras on it...?

 

First, my condolences for your loss. Second, you didn't mention whether your alarm remote was attached to the key ring. If the thief has both your key and remote - problem. As you probably are aware, you can order a new set of remotes (1 red master and 2 black slaves) and reprogram your alarm ECU. This, in combination with the previously mentioned Hill Engineering shift locks (I have one, they are great) will probably be OK. The F355 alarm system can be a pain in the ass, but it is a very complete and sophisticated alarm system.

If you really feel the need, re-keying is not than difficult and/or expensive. Perhaps your insurance company or your friend's home owner's insurance will cover the cost?

In a situation like this I say do whatever will give you peace of mind. Whatever the initial cost or hassle, it will be worth it if YOU know you won't worry about.

I have one and I absolutely agree. I like it much better than my bulky Enzo key, which I wasted big $$$ on.

 

Try to never leave any valuables visible in the car. Before you reach your final destination (a few blocks away), move any valuables you are not taking with you to the trunk. Then continue to where you intend to park. Yes, thieves monitor parking lots and watch as you place the laptop/camera/brief case into the trunk....then immediately swoop in when you leave the area.

I have not had any of my cars broken into in over 20 years, and I have to park in some pretty crappy parts of various cities for my job.

 

It probably also helps that you could take them "out" from > 1 mile away with a Barrett .50 BMG! LOL
