I've seen countless threads on here about "how much is a year ____ ferrari ___ with ____ miles" worth. With the economic recession causing prices to change so rapidly, it makes sense that people are having trouble keeping up with values for a particular exotic. Yet these people get bashed for asking such questions so often on the forums. So here's my question. How do you, personally, keep up with the current exotic car market valuations. I'm interested in specific sources. Do you pool average prices on ebay? craigslist? Well-known seller sites like Cats Exotics? What sources do you use to form your valuations for exotics?

Wholesale GALVES.COM is real good and Manheim auction reports. These are wholesale numbers but during times like these there isn't much difference from wholesale/retail. People and dealers are just trying to move inventory. KBB values are a joke.

Ferrari Market Letter asking price index, last page. It shows current market price, the price six, twelve and twenty four months ago. In my mail box every other week.

The way I understand it, those are the asking prices not the selling prices.

Good point. There's really no vested interest of promoting something that is no longer sellable (sp?)

Bear in mind that with used (and particularly vintage) exotica its hard to compare cars. Pedigree and condition can make a huge difference.
I take it from your name that you're at MIT. I've been doing business with them for years.

I dont know that there ever was a sure way of knowing a cars value unless you sell it. Auction prices never mean much in the real world unless you talking 250 GTO class stuff. And now with prices so much in flux and generally downward, sales a month old arent even really worth considering. But condition, mileage and records always seem to be the things people are the most interested in, even if it dont run. Ask your price and if you sell it, thats what it was worth to that buyer.

I have some things I would like to unload, but now sure isnt the time to sell anything, and surely not a Ferrari. Not unless you really have to and are willing to give it away. If the economy turns back around (and with the DOW up over 9000 maybe better days are upon us), perhaps come spring or early summer the prices will come back up. Time will tell.
