Looks like the price of high quality watches keeps dropping. I'm tempted to start buying a few more, but don't want to catch a falling knife. Anybody have any insights on how low it'll go?

This is the first I've heard of the situation, but would definitely jump in if the prices fall.

Yes prices have been falling a bit but not as much as some other things. (like cars) Things should stabilize as soon as the economy turns around. If you know when that is I would be most appreciative if you told me!

But I've also been hearing that many new/retail prices are falling/discounts are becoming available on previously hard to find pieces.

Like everything else, if you can, there are great deals out there that haven't been seen in ages.

Any examples? I haven't noticed, but I also haven't been keeping too close of a "watch" on the market. ;)

I've seen it more with Rolex. A couple of months ago everybody was selling the new Deepsea for $12,000 to $13,000. Now they can be found easily for around $9000.

I've noticed LNIB SS Daytonas that were selling for $12K+ 9 months ago are now selling in the $8K-$9K range.

Look at timezone's sales and showcase sections.

A lot of watches are being offered for a song. There was a Plat. 1815 for $9500!

Also, as people liquidate more unusual pieces are surfacing. Good time to buy if you can.

    Wow!

Did it go quick? I can't believe I missed that... that is a HELL of a deal. IIRC, people were asking >$20k for those not too long ago.

Cash talks, it's a buyers market I would say depending on the watch anywhere between 15-30% below asking price is reasonable Gold watchs being the exception.

Keep in mind most merchants will not accept an AMX for anything over 5k since they are tagged by the 4%fee but anything is negotiable.

I'm being offered a brand new Bedat stainless chronograph from a Bedat dealer on clearance for 70% off right now...$1905 versus $6350.

Is that something to jump on?? I really like the watch but I've been buying too many watches lately! :)

When you ask is it something to jump on, are you just asking if its a great price or if its a great watch? 70% off, if its a new watch from an AD would be a great discount on any watch. As for the watch itself its fine, but I have a friend who's wife has owns (a non chronograph model purchased new from an AD) and its been back and forth to the service center at least 3 times in the 4 years that she has had it. But maybe she just got a "lemon." I'm not a fan of their watches but if you like it why not take the plunge.

    Best regards,
    Dino

Is it a good discount off the suggested retail price? Yes, however they are being discounted huge amounts everywhere so it is not unusual. Not a bad watch but don't expect to sell it for more later as the resale value will be next to nothing.

Prices and hard to find models are now readily avaliable anywhere in the world. Rolex Daytona SS, the new Diver and Milgaus in green for either MSRP, or with some discounts. Meanwhile PPs will be issuing a new price list in Feb for 12% off and Brequet are going for discounts 35% and up. In Hk we are getting US/Europe new watches being shipped in so to realise cash for the dealers.
If U are seriously buying an expensive watch, hold off till Feb and view the new PP price list, you would not want to pay an extra 12% by not holding off. Other brands will follow and Rolex will be sold with discounts just the same. They could not stand firm when all brands are discounting like crazy in the next few months if not longer. BTW, Panerais are also being sold off, recently bought a 0005 while a friend a 0000 with dicounts. These models were once unavaliable anywhere, even in cities in Europe and now we are getting them shipped in as greys.

That is exactly right, Rolex will again raise the MSRP on new watches. Anybody who thinks Rolex will be dropping their prices is wrong. I'm not sure when we'll see the next price increase but I would expect it with 3-4 months. It might be easier to get a discount but if the prices are raised where's the savings?

Last month I bought a Rose Gold Daytona in Europe before the European prices increased. I did get a 25% discount (yes, from an authorized dealer) and the watch was MUCH less than here in the US.

    I've got a SS/18kt gold Daytona for sale....anybody interested?

I think the best resale comes from limited edition watches that are usually expensive and hard to find.

For example... AP T3, AP Montoya, etc. These watches seem to hold value or go up.

Other examples... some of the Pam subs or rads can fetch >MSRP.

Then you have the ultra luxury watches like the Patek Sky-moon. I am not intimiately familiar with prices on those but when I've seen advertised prices, there seems to be a generally increasing trend.

For "regular" watches, I wouldn't put too much stock in anything holding it's value in terms of you not losing money on it. Rolex's do OK but they absolutely do depreciate. If anyone disagrees, they ought to check selling prices for various models on TZ over the past year... distinct downward trend.

Used Rolexs have dropped in value a bit in the last year. Do you expect to see $5K SS Daytonas, $50K Ferrari 360s, or $300 Louis Vuitton womens purses, I don't think so. This year will be tough for any luxury goods but the bottom is not going to fall out either. Because most luxury items are in demand (there are always people wanting luxury) you will see that market start to stabalize the beginning of next year (and probably sooner). If someone wants a deal now is the time to buy but don't expect to "steal" something.
