Can someone give me some proper advice as the mechanics in Australia are turkeys!!!

Had a compression test done and fuel injectors cleaned on the 355 and when it was put back together again the car idles high then low then high. Was told it was the regulator had gone but it was OK before we did that work. Was then told it could be electrical to the regulator but that doesn't sound right.

Now what has happened is a rattle in the engine bay that seems to be the Flywheel but they told me that the flywheel has gone or because of the regulator being faulty this is causing the flywheel to rattle.

So what do you good US guys reckon.

Bit frustrated to say the least.

Also does anyone have the steps involved to change the handbrake shoes up the back?

Not the headers cracking is it mate? I had odd idling, and a loud ticking sound (at rough idle) when mine started to go. Same issues with mechanics dicking around with everything else as the first cracks were engine side. Remedied with aftermarket.

Perhaps the vlaka's left off a vacuum hose there somewhere Georgio.:rolleyes:

Sounds like it maybe sucking in air somewhere causing that idle to "hunt" like that. ;);)

Could be the throttle butterflies need to be balanced, co-incidence maybe? :D:D

PAP. Vlaka your right. I have checked all hoses and they are all on.

Throttle butterflies is very interesting. Do you know of a thread on this for me to look at?

Damn, was hoping it was an easy fix! :D:D

Ummmmmmmm.......I cant find one that could help you out sorry levendi. :):)

PM Aircon and ask him if he can help you through it or even email you some pics. He balanced them in his 355 when he rebuilt the engine. You will need to source a Mercury Gauge to the job. I suggest you go and visit some motorbike shops and ask if you can rent/borrow/steal/buy the Mercury Gauge. :p:p

It wont hurt to balance them and set the base idle again. PP said he had never done his in his 355 CH. He finally did it after the engine rebuild and he was amazed at how much smoother the engine ran at idle. :):)

Use some CRC/WD-40 etc and try and find a vacumn leak first.

I'm with Pap, I think vacuum leak.

Might seem a strange question but how is your battery? Been flat lately?

Check the vacuum lines to the regulators and make sure they are not pinched. Also make sure all injector connectors are fully seated and on the proper injector.

We didn't go on the run becuase it was pouring rain. The 355 looked at me and wept because it wanted to go BUT I couldn't do it.

But tonight we are having another go so lets see how we go.

Talk soon Al and hope all is well.

Thanks for your advice. I have done all that and it is OK. I borrowed an idle regulator from another 355 and the engine did run properly so my idle regulator must be gone but now I do not know which one. More importantly these idle regulators are very expensive. ANd here in AUstralia Bosch will not sell you them becuase of propreity righst from Ferrari. I got a price from GT parts in Arizona and they told me they have never sold one since 2001 becuase they don't go bad. Why would mine have gone bad or why was it ruined all of a sudden.

One view I have is that for about 2-3 months I was running the car with the battery light on and this caused a lot of problems from CEL to everything else. I rebuilt the alternator and all the problems I had dissapeared. Maybe running the car on the battery caused a 'short' and that is why the idle aregulator went??

Idle regulators can get clogged and stick. Clean both with a good solvent inside and out, then lube them with WD-40 and retry.

Thanks for that but the part number on mine says 0 280 140 527. Maybe they are different between US and Australia but that doesn't make sense??

I'd use carb cleaner first (then lube with WD-40), but I'm just a Stooge, what do I know!

*and if you do need a replacement, it's just a Volvo 960 idle air controller for 1992 to 1997 models (I've seen them on eBay for $30 now and again)...

OK here is some good news for all 355 owners that need a particular part. I made some inquiries for the idle regulator from bosch and they said they could get for $A800. Well I did some more research and found that this idle regulator is the same part used on a 1994 volvo model 960. I mean exactly the same part. But Volvo here want $A600 for it. So I finally found it at a wrecker for the grand total of $A75!!

The funny thing is that when you look at the part you can see the bosch number on it. There is another number on the bottom 3517886. Guess what that number is??

    The Volvo part number!!!

You can also get it from some of the US websites brand new for around $280US.

So no need to get it from Ferrari who charge at least $1000!!! Just get it elsewhere.

Quite funny that we have a Volvo part in our engine??

Note my 355 is the 2.7 Motronic so the part number for the 5.2 might be different.

Hope this helps anyone else out there that may need this part in the future.

Yes it is with a loan part but should I get the one at the wreckers for $75 or just buy 2 new ones from the US and replace both??
