The Husker Challenge Grill on my Nero ts ... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's my plan, I looked at the diagram when I got the grill and thought "i'll just cut that out in one piece on each side". I even got a nice low-depth metal cutting blade for my sawzall and jig saw (depending on which saw I end up using). I dont want to use a die grinder unless I have too... too sloppy. either way, I picture myself crying as I cut! lol BTW Tom, the grill looks great on your car dude!!
Wow. That Grill on black is stunning. Daniel's photos were taken after dark it appeared so I couldn't really tell much. But the real question is, what is that beauty sitting to the left of the TS? I'd like to see a photo of THAT!
Goth, I haven't tried that but it seems logical to me. For kicks I went back to stock on mine just to see how hard it might be to weld. My dad did it all in about 45 minutes. Then I cut it all off again and went back to round. Mind you, I can do all of this in my sleep by now.
Thanks guys! I think it looks great too. Thanks so much, Husker, for making this beautiful challenge grill. I will keep all of my stock parts, of course, but I can't imagine ever taking this grill off - not while it's my car. THAT is my '67 Jaguar E-Type coupe. It is also nero, though the Brits call it "black" ... if you can't tell under all of that embarassing dust. I will wash it and place it more prominently in the background next time!
Hey Tom, mine is a 1991 January production. Your grill looks great. I prefer the larger horse over the smaller one, but to each his own. Boy that grill really looks nice on black cars
So much for that theory. Actually, the answer, I think, is much more obvious: operator error. I have not been able to confirm this, but I think the left and right side harnesses are mirror images, and therefore wont work on the opposite side. I have swithed them out, and will report back ... after I install a new battery. (Geesh!)
Hey guys just an update on something cool. I just sent this to Tom Patton as he was contemplating a respray of his Grill in Glossy black. This is really a snap to do and kind of fun. Last night, I sanded down a grill and painted it glossy black and then clear coated. All before bed time. Turned out pretty slick!!! This is so easy and trust me and I'm no painter. 1. Go go Autozone and get your black auto paint in the aerosol can. 2. Get a clearcoat can too. 3. Get a "spray gun" attachment to put on the can for better spray. Just mask off the screen and horse, spray on black glossy auto paint, about 8 minutes later come on with another coat (on top of the sticky coat). Wait for 2 hours and then clear coat the whole thing. Just get one of those inexpensive spray gun attachments at Lowes that can attach to an aerosol paint can and you're set to go. If you screw it up, wait an hour, rough it up with sandpaper, and repeat! And if you don't like the glossy, rough it up again and go back with satin!
For those who have been following the LeMans Grill... A big "thank you" to Daniel Pass for helping me solve a seemingly small concern with the LeMans Grill that has absolutely completed the factory look to the Grill. Without boring you with details, the only issue that I had with the Grill that I hadn't quite yet solved to my satisfaction was the fitment and security of the Grill to the corners of the car. I am happy to report that this issue IS NOW SOLVED. With the Daniel solution, the "gap" between the grill and the body is less than one quarter of an inch, less than MANY of the gaps between various FACTORY panels on the car. I will snap a couple of photos during daylight hours so that you can see it for yourself. Thanks Daniel - you're an American hero, despite what your wife says!
Excellent keep solving all the kinks I am almost ready to order. P.s you should offer the grill painted flat black or gloss depending on the customer I know I would definitely would like that option.
Here's an extreme close-up of the side of the LeMans Grill next to the car AFTER the Daniel fix. It's a glove fit! (Ignore the texture finish on this Grill - it was an experiment on my own Grill). Image Unavailable, Please Login
My poor Grill. I've sanded it and repainted it I would estimate 20 times. This particular paint has a very fine "texture" to it that is really slick looking. It's solid black though and the photo doesn't really show that. The photo isn't really representative of how fine the texture is because it's magnified so much - I can see dust particles clearly on the photo. In any event, you can't hurt the Grill be repainting it - mine is proof of that!
Just noticed that this tubi style website has a simular rear grill. http://tubistylejapan.com/MODIFY348.htm Image Unavailable, Please Login
Good luck finding out! I tried to get in touch with these people for weeks to order one of these so I could examine it more closely. There are some pecularities about it. First, the taillights are in quite a bit closer toward the middle. Second, there is an odd treatment of the grill at the base of the lights. I've seen some closeups of this and it appears that the lights sit on their own "platform" and pop right out of the grill, so the grill isn't molded around them in any way - it's just cut-out. Handy, but not exactly a factory look IMO. Of course, my opinion is totally unbiased. But the LeMans Grill definitely borrowed a few cues from this one, as well as the Goth grill. It was a combination of about 3 concepts. I know that I sent a few of you my powerpoint drawings of the concept way back in the day. Gosh it's been almost a year!
Here's some before and after, and also the one from Japan: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
One other major difference you will notice is that the inner taillights on the LeMans Grill sit slightly above the outer lamps in keeping with the other rear lines of the car. It appears that the Tubi Japan set-up is more of a block-style where all of the taillights are on a flat line across, if that makes sense.
Ouch that grill from Japan is but ugly or rather fugly. Does not compare to the Le Mans grill, no way no how.
No comparison Husker - as soon as my car fund is back where it should be I'll be in touch for the LeMan.
Thanks guys. Just FYI, I know that several of you have emailed me about ordering a Grill. Right now I am completely out of them, and it could be late Feb. before I have more. I have 3 folks waiting, but that will still leave a couple that don't yet have a home. If you want one from this next batch, you might shoot me a PM and I can save you one back. But also let me know if you need taillights as I need to order a new batch of those from Daniel. Have a great weekend!
