Same thought here. We all have our biases.

Apart from the Alfa 8C, I haven't seen a really beautiful production car come out of Italy in the last decade. (Yes, the Maser Granturismo is handsome, but I wouldn't chop off a limb to get one.)

The more time I spend around sports cars, the more I think the 1970s marked the end of really legendary design (with the 308/328/288 GTO/F40 strand being the stark exception -- but you could call them sequels to the Dino 206/246.)

I was walking down the street today (Santa Monica) and saw a red 355 spider just cruise by (I actually heard it first of course) - and thought to myself "what a beautiful car." I don't say that to myself often ... I'm always thinking about cars, and to see one that excites me is rare. The 355 did it for sure.

Anyone else would have cut a corner somewhere in the bodywork so parts would fit, Ferrari altered parts to make everything fit within the body. The lines on that car, I can follow them for hours and still stand in awe of how any human mind could have created it. It is a veritable masterpiece. And IMHO, NOTHING before, and NOTHING since, can best it. The F-40 is certainly more powerful, and has that raw animal power that is beautiful of its own accord. The 288 is very pretty, but the original has a childish innocence that belies its underlying rage. It just seems "perfect".

But thats just me. There are many different Ferrari's that I love. 312PB's, P3/4's, most all the 250's, most all the mono racing cars. I like the 355, the 348, but have to say I was never excited about the 246, why I cant really say. I am not real crazy about Daytonas either. But I love the style of the earlier 365 coupes with that long thin nose. The 250 Lusso, well, that is just too darn sexy, also just about "perfect". But the 308 GTB stands alone. Even if there had never been a Magnum PI, the car would still have been on every young mans wall. In my fantasy dream where I am wealthy beyond measure and where I could own all the great classics, there would still be a 308. I would park it right between the Lusso and the 166MM.

Only in the eyes of the beholder. I first seen that car as a roadster in red, and immediatly imagined it black and thought of the Batmobile. That is the closest any production car has ever come to the concept in both presence and performance. I think its a very beautiful machine, but the 308 is still prettier.

The Daytona doesn't have enough curves to be put anywhere near the top of the list for "most beautiful". Lines are too straight for the title. I mean, it doesn't look a whole lot different than the Datsun Z cars from the same period. If Datsun can do it (even though those Z cars are beautiful), it shouldn't be "top of the food chain" for Ferrari.

Just my opinion.

By the way, I think the 308/328 is timeless but the F50, 512BBi and 288GTO are my picks in that order.

The Daytona is one car that just does not have enough styling on the front for me with that long straight hood.

It's a muscular car with an amazingly long and complex bonnet and an imposing stance, and it was a groundbreaking car that pretty well influenced everything that came for the next 20 years. It was the Ferrari that initiated the 'belt line' that followed on the Boxer/308/328, 288 GTO, F40, 348 and 355. Even the door handles are art -- everything that came before pretty much used the standard pull. Those four tail lights became a Ferrari signature. I think I'm right about this, but those legendary five-pointed star wheels that graced racers in the '70s made the leap to production cars with the Daytona - before that wire wheels were the rule.

The interior by itself is stunning, launching the 'Daytona' seat tradition. And those tailpipes... menacing.

It is much more subtle than something like the F40 or the Lambo Miura, but in the metal it's a beautiful brute. In black and tan, it has presence unlike any other modern-ish car I've seen.

+1 When you drive a Daytona passers by smile and give the thumbs up, modern Ferraris produce somewhat less polite responses.

The Daytona is also one of the few cars that looks great in any colour.
