Call your Porsche dealer...Give them the part number, I think the relay is used in the 928's

Daniel -- I didn't say that that one (the ABS relay 92861512401) wouldn't work. I said that you'd have to add an external fuse (and check that the terminal locations are the same). Perhaps these guys know of another Porsche relay that is truly identical, or are suggesting that the Porsche supplier can provide the 92861512400 relay.

Sorry.. It came out wrong.. I hope someone know about a crossreference from any other car.. Isnt it strange if ferrari is the only car that have this relay with the fuse?

Can someone supply me with the actual part # that Bosch uses or that is on the relay? Also a description of what the terminals are "doing" when in and out of service? (Steve, you probably have that info.)
Also which models of F is this relay utilized?
I may be able to source this at a much better price.

I appreciate your thought (and would love it if you could identify another practical alternative), but it's not a Bosch brand relay -- it's a Stribel brand relay part number 92861512400

terminal 30 = +12V (direct connection to battery +12V on a US or late euro TR)
    terminal 31 = ground
terminal 15 = when this terminal goes +12V (and terminal 31 is at ground), the switch contacts inside the relay close which connects terminal 30 to terminal 87 -- +12V on terminal 15 occurs on a US or late euro TR when the tachometric relay is closed -- i.e., if the starter motor is actually cranking (key in Pos III) or if the engine is actually running (key in Pos II and the 7-12 coil firing).
terminal 87 is used to run "voltage-sensitive" components -- on US and late euro TR, this terminal 87 is the +12V power supply to run the injection ECUs.
There is also a 10A fuse in the 30-to-87 path and a Zener diode connected between the output of the fuse and terminal 31.
In symbol form it looks like this:
    Image Unavailable, Please Login

The purpose of this gizmo is that if your alternator goes haywire, and its output voltage goes up to a high value (like 20~22V) -- i.e., if a high voltage appears on terminal 30, the Zener diode (Z22 in the diagram) goes into conduction, which lets a big current flow from terminal 30 to terminal 31, which (intentionally) blows the 10A fuse -- preventing the (undesirable) high voltage on terminal 30 from reaching terminal 87 (and the voltage-sensitive ECUs). You could also say that this gizmo "protects" the voltage-sensitive component from an overvoltage condition -- hence often called a "Protection relay".

If you do an internet search on "overvoltage relays" or "Mercedes overvoltage relays", you will find other relays that have this same internal arrangement (zener diode + relay switch contact), but, of course, it may, or may not, have a fuse (the fuse can be located elsewhere in the wiring going to terminal 30), and the terminals won't be a plug and play. I'm glad to see Ricambi has the part at a reasonable cost -- the present AFP and eurospares price are high enough that I would hassle with adapting another part.

If you look at the symbol on this Porsche 928 ABS relay (Stribel 92861512401), you can see it has the exact same internal arrangement, but without the 10A fuse (so to use this relay as a substitute, one would have to add a 10A fuse between the +12V wire in the harness and terminal 30):
    Image Unavailable, Please Login

For "what model used?" information, go to the eurospares site and type in the F PN (for 61766200 you get the link below)

    http://www.eurospares.co.uk/searchResult.asp?M=&Mo=&A=&B=&S=61766200

Then select "Will this fit my car? (Click to find out)" in any of the individual listings -- this gives the list of models (and the corresponding SPC pages) where the part is used.

Question for Steve or anyone who may know. Last fall, ECS Tuning had the 92861512400 for sale at about $107 but it's not available anymore. Apparently it has been superseded by 92861512402. My concern is it may not be an exact replacement, considering 92861512401 is not. Anyone know if 92861512402 is a drop in replacement for 92861512400?

I don't have any information on 92861512402 (but would be glad to cast an eyeball over any specs/symbols/information you can find).

Are you having trouble buying 92861512400, or are you just trying to get a better price?

I was a little confused. I think I was under the impression it was more expensive than it actually is. I don't recall where I got that impression, I think I saw it at Eurospares for around 400 euros. I did see after posting that Ricambi has it for $140 so I should have edited or deleted the post. Thanks for asking about it.

Did we see the price at Eurospare.... frightful... £392.00

This is more or less 4 times more compared with Ricambi America's at $110 each...

i just got the protection relay from ricambi it cost with tax 160 out the door , my car had problem running very ruff @ idle it would stall , found the fuse blown on top of the relay . replaced the relay and the car work like new . so if you are having problem at idle running and step on the gas and car stalls it could be the protection relay check this first . thank you jim

Just to answer my own question regarding whether 92861512402 is a good replacement for 92861512400, it is.

I ordered the 61766200 and the part received was the 92861512402. Google is your friend, 92861512402 can be found online under $90 from Porsche places.
