It's amazing how similar all the V8 engines from Ferrari look. ANything in particular wrong with it? What did it need to warrant pulling the engine?

Those intakes are just AWESOME !!!!! I must stay that Ferrari engines just have that "exotic" look. That 360 motor is almost a work of art! It's no wonder with all the techno-goodies, that they can get 400hp from only 3.6 liters of v8. I've always had arguments with other carnuts, musclecar guys in particular....spouting about how their 454 cubic inch v8 Chevelle having 390hp (LS-5 in this case) And I say that's great, but Ferrari gets 394hp form only 221 cubic inches. Now if Ferrari were to make a v8 with 454 cubic inches....just imagine the power output!

Beautiful pictures, they really did a great job cleaning up that engine. I see they even powder coated the intake covers.

It is funny they took out all the maze of hose and lines but left the intake manifold vaccum line on there. LOL!

The engine is from a 360 Modena F1 Challenge - it's undergoing a full rebuild.

Those are great pics. I love my 360 and love the way the whole car performs but especially how it looks.

Those are some of the best engine pics yet.

    Thanks,

    Stew

Yes -- thanks for taking the time to post. Most of us only get "up close and personal" with our own F, so it's great to see some internal technical details of other models. Have to agree that those intake runners are downright intimidating!

Had another question though. I noticed that the oil distribution relief in the cam journals on that 360 engine is different than on a 308 (and that they sort of have opposite advantages and disadvantages) -- does anyone know if that design change was first introduced on 360 or did it show up earlier (e.g., 348, 355, 512TR)?

(Ignore the scoring in the 308 example -- caused by an unrelated problem):

Can no one respond? Surely, someone from the 348 brotherhood must know whether the 348 has the blind recess or the thru recess in the cam journals - and same for the 355 posse!

Thank you Simon -- I appreciate the help.

Now, does anyone know if the 360 lubrication system is specifically oversized more than the earlier models -- or if this "thru" modification is something that one could do to the earlier heads without other changes? Or has anyone made such a modification to the earlier heads?

If one were to make this modification to a 308 head, the first concern that comes to mind would be if the oil pressure would be enough to compensate for the new found flow.

Or could the oil pressure be adjusted to compensate....

Sorry, gents, the technical stuff is out of my league. I'll see if I can't get Kent to log in and field your queries.

Why would you think what you think? You could make the argument that the slot accelerates the oil bleedoff and you could dry the bearing at the extremities. You could also say that the slot makes turbulance for the fluid dynamics of the oil wedge altering pressure gradient distributed over the whole bearing. Personally I don't think it maters at all. It is just a design excercise like using a torque wrench vs. bolt stretch, vs torque angle to get a bolt to torque. They all work and many people have their own very good reasons for liking their method but in reality they all work fine. There could also be a highly technical reason born from F1 but I doubt it means much in a sub 9000rom street motor that sees 5-10k miles a year. If there is such a reason I could only guess. If the reason is positive oiling as you suggest...I could by that too.

This is the first time I've seen the 360 intake apart. Does anyone know how it works? What are the extra eight intake holes for? They seem to somehow go to the opposite banks' intakes. What's up with that?

(Interesting that the heads and intake are totally different from my car, but parts of the block and oil filter stand look like it came right off my '75.)
