    Hello:

I'm buying a car from a private party this Saturday and I'm dying to take it down to Atlantic City. Just wondering what the legal consequences would be if I put on NJ plates from a Porsche I used to have, kept the title with me at all times, and had full insurance coverage in effect, and I got pulled over.

Let's assume this hypothetical takes place in NJ.

    Thanks.

    Ken

    Ken,

It all depends on the police offer that pulls you over. Other than tickets I would worry about them towing the car and doing it incorrectly causing damage.

    Ken,

I am not an expert and many from law enforcement here could be kind enough to help you with an answer, but I think you would be taking an illegal chance.

If its a private party - I belive that you can get a temp registratin to hang in your back window from any DMV agency. I would do what is legal, because having plates on the car justs ask for trouble in you get pulled over - especially in a casino type city and an exotic.

PS. If you buy a car from a dealer, they should be able to give you a temporary registration to stick in your back window and your insurance policy that you have should cover the new car for something like 72 hours - actually when you buy your new car call your insurnace company ans have them add it to the policy right away.

They will most likely tow your car. We were on a run a few years back with a member who did this same exact thing. He took the plates of his Escalade and put them on his 360 Spyder. Did not end up good. The State Police had the car towed and then had it left outside all weekend. Needless to say, that won't ever happen again

Thanks for the great suggestion. I just found out NJ DMV offers 20-day temporary registration.

Probably something you shouldn't be typing on the forums.

    Just a thought.

Best case if you get pulled w.wrong tags/unreg/etc is the cop lets you call a tow yourself to get it home, or if you're VERY close to home lets you drive it back w.or w.out paper (a ticket).

Worst case, he can impound it and cite you for a few fun violations (no reg, improper display of tag, etc), or any combination of these things, just depends on how cooperative you both are.

If it's possible I'd ask the seller if you can leave the tag on to get it home and promise to fed x it right back. Don't tell him you'll be detouring though
