You stole my thunder (or ice). Check out the Al Gore movie documentary/book, “An Inconvenient Truth – A Global Warning”, 2006 and you will see chronologic pics of the ice melt/degradation for real. It's scary stuff.

from the begining of time, humans way over-estimate their abilities. Unlike every other speices on this planet whom adapt and evolve to the ever changing mother nature and their surroundings, we humans on the other hand do our best to change our surroundings to best-suit us. There is no doubt that we've been polluting our planet, and to some extent perhaps some of the abnormal change in mother change is related to years of us reshaping our planet. however, humans are only a tiny tiny tiny particle in a system that goes beyond our understanding, not only we don't fully understand our own solar system and how the planets and the sun effecting each other, this planet has had more than a few ice age without modern human's existance.

I'd say, listen less to your television, its all a new scare tactic to mind control us. Globle warming is nothing but a natural cycle of this bigger system that we have absolutely no idea about and control over, and unfortunately some people is using it as the new relgion of the 21st century, like all religions, its got a hell a lot of money and power involved. For everything has a begining has an end, everyone of us will die and so will this planet, this solar system and who knows, perhaps this universe. Stop fking worrying and just live happy with everyday you're livin' in, and be responsible to yourself and your surroundings.

    Well said.

And of course what dos all this fear get us? A nice new international market in carbon trading that's already looking like it will keep the Third World just that and open a new avenue for the Wall St guru's to diddle the books over. Could veen be the saving grace that pulls the economy out of the world of hurt it's fallen into.

    Not cynical much.

    Errrrr, not thanks "where full"

Victoria gets NOTHING out of the deal, enough crow-eaters already here.

Victoria currently has over 1000 new residents arriving every week, its WAY to many we cannot go on like this.

Try doing a deal with the west, as in WesternAustralia.

Our world according to George Carlin - I agree with him :)

"We're so self-important. So self-important. Everybody's going to save something now. "Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails." And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. What? Are these ****ing people kidding me? Save the planet, we don't even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven't learned how to care for one another, we're gonna save the ****ing planet?

I'm getting tired of that ****. Tired of that ****. I'm tired of ****ing Earth Day, I'm tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren't enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for their Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don't give a **** about the planet. They don't care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don't. Not in the abstract they don't. You know what they're interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They're worried that some day in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn't impress me.

Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are ****ed. Difference. Difference. The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We've been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we've only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we're a threat? That somehow we're gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that's just a-floatin' around the sun?

The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles...hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worlwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages...And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet...the planet...the planet isn't going anywhere. WE ARE!

We're going away. Pack your ****, folks. We're going away. And we won't leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. Maybe. A little styrofoam. The planet'll be here and we'll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. A surface nuisance.

You wanna know how the planet's doing? Ask those people at Pompeii, who are frozen into position from volcanic ash, how the planet's doing. You wanna know if the planet's all right, ask those people in Mexico City or Armenia or a hundred other places buried under thousands of tons of earthquake rubble, if they feel like a threat to the planet this week. Or how about those people in Kilowaia, Hawaii, who built their homes right next to an active volcano, and then wonder why they have lava in the living room.

The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we're gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, 'cause that's what it does. It's a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed, and if it's true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new pardigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn't share our prejudice towards plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn't know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, "Why are we here?" Plastic...*******.

So, the plastic is here, our job is done, we can be phased out now. And I think that's begun. Don't you think that's already started? I think, to be fair, the planet sees us as a mild threat. Something to be dealt with. And the planet can defend itself in an organized, collective way, the way a beehive or an ant colony can. A collective defense mechanism. The planet will think of something. What would you do if you were the planet? How would you defend yourself against this troublesome, pesky species? Let's see... Viruses. Viruses might be good. They seem vulnerable to viruses. And, uh...viruses are tricky, always mutating and forming new strains whenever a vaccine is developed. Perhaps, this first virus could be one that compromises the immune system of these creatures. Perhaps a human immunodeficiency virus, making them vulnerable to all sorts of other diseases and infections that might come along. And maybe it could be spread sexually, making them a little reluctant to engage in the act of reproduction.

Well, that's a poetic note. And it's a start. And I can dream, can't I? See I don't worry about the little things: bees, trees, whales, snails. I think we're part of a greater wisdom than we will ever understand. A higher order. Call it what you want. Know what I call it? The Big Electron. The Big Electron...whoooa. Whoooa. Whoooa. It doesn't punish, it doesn't reward, it doesn't judge at all. It just is. And so are we. For a little while."

Apparently the theory is that if there is a sea level rise it will not be distributed evenly around the globe, the rises will be greater in the northern hemisphere:

"A largely neglected 1977 study predicted that peak values would be 20% higher than the eustatic in the North Pacific and 5 to 10% higher along the U.S. coastline. We show, with use of a state-of-the-art theory, that the sea-level rise in excess of the eustatic value will be two to three times higher than previously predicted for U.S. coastal sites."

Doesn't seem to mention Australia so nothing to worry about, but it can't be too good for real estate in the Florida swamps.

Okay, then going by the theory that there is a specific amount of water here at any one time (albeit in different shapes and forms), some of which goes through the weather cycle - maybe the rising water levels will be a result of less water being in the atmosphere and being recycled to earth as rain? Simply because water, whether frozen or not, takes up the same amount of space/area, as shown in the 'melt ice in a glass of water' experiment.

These are only my thoughts from a limited knowledge of weather cycles, just kinda thinking out aloud, (or in writing as the case maybe) so have no problem with anyone explaining to me why I'm getting it wrong :D

you just gave me a thought. what if the water cycles are what effects the environment. as more of the earths water builds up in the ice caps, less water is distributed throughout the world, causing drought. with drought there is much less vegitation, forrest die etc... and things get hotter. the ice caps melt and the sea levels rise, with this i assume water tables rise, more rain, more vegitation, and the globe cools again.

note: i have no idea about this... just a thought.

Actually not a bad thought. When climate change brought on by sun spots or solar flares increases global temperatures, which by the way is the only way earth temperatures rise, creates conditions of higher Co2, Aha! says Al gore and all the other Co2 pundits that man is the evil one, more Co2, more temp. rise. Wrong! The highest temps on earth coincide with the most active Sun activity and as a result the earths ocean temps rise and release vast amounts of Co2 trapped in cold deep ocean water and melting polar ice. Sun activity creates more Co2, conversely Co2 does not create global warming, it is the result of measurable increases in solar radiation.
After the huge measurable Co2 accumulation, greenery all over the earth experiances an expotencial growth period before sequestering mass quatities of Co2 for growth factors. Now what happens if all this sequestering coincides with a very quiet sun activety period with very little solar flares? Quite frankly one of the coldest winters in 30-40 years and the lowest sun activety since 2000 and perhaps the beginning of the next ice age if the sun does not get active again soon. A huge percentage of our scientists support this theory countering the Co2 global warming pundits as the cause.

There's actually an 800 year lag tme between temperature change and CO2 level. That is, the CO2 comes roughly 800 years after the temperature rise. This is what Al Gore refers to "some problems" with the data he represents in the infamous "cherry picker" scene from "An Inconvenient Truth".

Solar activity, on the other hand, appears to drive temperature change when plotted togethor.

If you google "sunspot global warming" there are links to arguments for and against this notion.
