I have been a Porsche guy for many years, hopefully soon to be part of the F family. It looks as though the 355 may be the victim that I will be choosing for my first. The conv top mechanism seems to be problematic with pots, cylinders, micro switches, etc. From an outsiders perspective it would seem simple to ditch the mechanism entirely and utilize the top manually when needed and save a few pounds to boot. In the 4 years of ownership of my 360 spider and 355 spider. My 355 has never caused a days problem, ever. Were as my 360 did.
It would be a little silly to start dismantling a perfectly good system just because WHAT MAY happen.
Mate you have not even bought the car yet, why not have a PPI on the car and make sure the roof mechanism is working right in the first place.
With your chain of thinking one might as well remove the potential problematic Ferrari V8 for a ford V8 just in case;)

Good luck.....disconnect the hydralic cylinders and give it a go......if you can get the top in the full down position you need to change your name to Houdini or worlds' strongest man. You'll definitely save some weight alright not so much from the car but from the workout you'll get...plus you may actually bend/tweak something you didn't expect in the process. The 348's were DESIGNED for mechanical operation and would be the only way I'd go if I wanted to do it unassisted.
