I have the dreaded door lock plastic thingy broken in my 94 ts CH and have the whole door apart to replace. Problem is one of the black hexed screws at the end of the door is stripped and I can't get the SOB out to access the bracket/lock. If I try to drill out the existing screw, will I damage the closing mechanism? Any suggestions? (the other 2 retaining screws came out hard and had an orange goo in the threads-possibly some type of epoxy? could this screw be glued in from prior owner repair? what now?)

    Welcome to Ferrari Chat, John!

Have you removed the inner door panel(s) for access, or have you removed the outer "strakes" for access? It was several years ago when I had to replace the plastic piece on my drivers door lock, but it seems to me that access is much easier from the outside, and it's easy to remove the strakes. I think there might be a thread about this in the archives.

Spendy little piece of plastic, huh? What is the kit going for these days?

    Welcome to FerrariChat John. :):)

Can you get some side-cutters onto the head of the screw?? I usually have a win using them. The sharp side cutters bite into the head of the screw and you use them to crack it loose. After that, get a screw driver on it, if there is a little bit of the head left. :p:p

    Welcome chickmd

I don't know if this would work, but I have had good luck in general using a dremmel cut off wheel to create a groove in the head of stripped screws that allow a flatblade screwdriver to unscrew them. Maybe that can work for you?

are you really in DC with a 348? I thought I was the only one. I live near the national cathedral

Use your highspeed handpiece 1557 bur cut slot take out with screw driver. Sometimes you can get a sacrificial hex wrench and JB weld it into the hex head screw. You can also tackweld a hex wrench in my preferred method because I am too lazy to wait for jbweld to dry. This will make up for the strip looseness then you can back it out.

Hold the drilling and potentially making more of a mess, go to your local hard wear store there is a product that works extremely well, it is two bits that you attach to your drill, 1 strips the screw even further the 2nd screws in counterclockwise and will remove your bolt they come in different sizes and works amazingly all you need is a drill.

Thanks for all the welcomes! Great site...both suggestions and comaraderie.

Yes, it is a factory 94 ts CH,red/tan,#1/13 owned by me for 8 years, purchased thru Ferrari of Denver.
No, never went to school in southern Maryland-must be my evil twin brother.
Yes I have outer strakes, inner trim, window assembly all removed. repair kit $150 from Daniel.
Tried to cut a notch with dremel for flat screwdriver-screw will not budge.
Bought a "screw extractor kit" and after stripping deeper as instructed, used opposite end to reverse torque out screw--the metal threads on the tool stripped out.
I have never had this much problem removing a stupid screw before. As mentioned, because the other 2 screws had some orange stuff in their threads after removal, I wonder if this thing has been epoxied in place and the screw is a replacement of some different material. It is slightly more shiny on the head as if different material or possibly painted. I love the f-cars, but sometimes it's this little s#@$ that gets frustrating!
    Keep the suggestions coming!!

You may have minitorch for adding contacts, C02 ethelyne chloride spray to check endo, rubber porcelain polishing wheels.
If there is no plastic around it heat it with a l minitorch to break up the locktite on the screw. If you can tackweld a hexwrench to it the heat will destroy the locktite too and the wrench will allow you to back out the screw. If you will not destroy any plastic around you can use a impact driver if you got a slot cut in it. Sometimes putting the screw driver on the slot and banging it with a hammer breaks up the locktite. You can use your ethylene chloride spray or better yet co2 spray on the screw head then hit it to fracture up the glue and remove if you don't want to use heat. You can alternate the cold with using a rubber wheel and polishing the heck out of the head of the screw which will heat it and break up the locktite then you can unscrew it. The HP tools will fit in the dremel with a 3/32" (iirc) chuck from home depot

If you've got two of them out, just take the grinder and grind the head of the last screw off (don't try to cut it off, that will damage the paint for sure). Grind it a little at a time to keep the heat down. Once the head is gone, or worn down to the point that you can push it through with a drift, the latch assembly will pull into the door and you should be able to remove the rest of the screw from the latch with vice grips.

What Miltonian said or just drill it with about a 1/4" bit until the head falls off. I have a hard time believing that a fat slot for a screwdriver could not be cut. I know just the screws you are talking about; sombody beat me to the stripping part. That loctite on there is some tough stuff. If you used the screw extractor be sure that you drilled deep enough to allow it to bite properly. Don't break it off in there or you wont be able to do anymore drilling. If your grinding you will surely remove some paint so use it as a last resort. I ordered new metal film washers and original screws from Ricambi and I'm wondering if I should go down and get some back oxide torx replacements. If you think your going to break something or scratch the paint just ask us and we will help. It can be done!
