I actually think you WILL see some "stretching" and "long years" at several points of production as Ferrari came up against various smog laws and mandates driving technical revisions.

It would have definately been in their interest to produce as many cars as possible against the technical deadlines..OTOH they would be viewed as "old cars" by the buyer to Ferrari's detriment on the sales side.

I'm sure that explains the "carb line" running thru 1980 for Euro cars for example while another "North America" line would have produced the early injected models for USA.....

I think they rushed a lot of VINs into the data registry and then built the cars, as able, to reconcile to that. It explains how a lot of cars "passed each other" on the line when you compare VIN to Build Date.....

That happens for sure but other times it is not as easy to figure out. In 91 TR was a 49 state car. I have seen some 90 50 state cars built way later than 91's.

Also F40 VINs tend to be in big blocks of numbers. They were assigned numbers and built whenever they got the time.

This shows my car 33335 as a "Red" car? Its white and best I can tell, never been repainted. The spider cracks should prove that! lol With red leather, i can't imagine it coming from the factory with red exterior too? Joe

I contacted the owner of that site last year or so. He lives in Germany, this is only a hobby site, and he has to translate all submitted Ferrari data sent to him from around the world. Robert's direct Email address is [email protected]

I hope this gives some perspective as to why the information is not complete on this site.

This was one of his responses to Emails we exchanged...

    Hello Michael,

Thank you very much for supporting my register project. I am always happy
to receive some "new entries" or updates. As you ma y have noticed, I
concentrate on the GTB (Berlinetta) version right now. Although I
initially thought of tracking all 308's, the massive amount of cars built made it
clear that it would be too much of an effort for my limited spare time.
So I decided to focus on the carburetted GTB (like the one I own) first.

Anyway, I keep the data of all the other 308's as well, and maybe later I
will extend the Register to all tipos. So your information is not "lost"!
Regarding the VIN, I assume your car is a 308 GTBi QV.

Some words about the register: So far I have about 1,450 carburetted
    GTB's
listed. Regarding a total of 2,897 cars built, there is still much work
waiting for me! I hope you found the info on my we bsite somewhat
interesting. I am updating the site from time to time, but being pretty
    busy
with my job, I have to find some spare time for it. The registry is just
a hobby, and my 308 GTB (#25859) wants to be driven from time to time,
    too...

    Enjoy riding your 308!

Best regards and thanks again for sending over the information,

Colors are a tough one. It seems to be the hardest part in getting reliable info. As I said I have several data bases I am working from. Most info is in agreement to a very high degree.......except colors.

    I have a 1980 308 GTBi - 31983.

Just got her back from the paint shop last Friday. Had her stripped to bare metal, door skins replaced - brand new paint applied. I'm in the process of putting everything back together. Can't wait til spring.

Who is Ferrari Customer Care and do you have an email address?

As has been mentioned many times before, Ferrari is very stingy with information for non-carborated cars. But you seem be an exception.

Since my website seems to be more popular than I had imagined, let me point something out:

    1) It's just a hobby site, relying on data submitted from owners and serial number spotters, or found in books, on websites, eBay auctions, and the likes. So the information cannot be taken as a 100% proven reference. Running the registry and keeping the website updated takes quite some of my spare time, and it does not make any money (instead it actually costs money).

    2) I am concentrating on the carb'd 308 GTB. Although I try be be well informed, the information on the other models (GTS and injected versions) is just an addition to the site. In the case of the much criticised table about the yearly production of the various 308s, this was taken from a book ("Ferrari 308/328" by Dirk-Michael Conradt, Motorbuch Verlag, 1990). It was the only literature source which I found, listing the 308 production numbers per year. See thread http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=223768 (post 40 and following). Of course I have removed the table in the meantime, due to the informaton from various FChatters. But instead of saying that I'd be "on dope" here on the forum, it would be much nicer (but maybe less funny?) to simply send me an e-mail and tell me about the errors. I am far from knowing much about the 308 and always happy to learn.

So please: if you know something is erroneous on my site (even if it is just the colour of your car), simply let me know, instead of posting polemic remarks on FChat. The site should provide some useful and diverting information, it should be fun for you and me. Not more. If it becomes a pain in the ass, I will simply put it off-line.

Simply logged onto the Ferrari Owners Website: https://www.owners.ferrari.com, clicked on the "contact us" link on the bottom right of the page, and asked what color my car was originally.

    Hello Robert :)

How are you? I'm still enjoying my 308, too. Yes, your website is extremely popular, and good people like yourself, who volunteer to keep us informed of the details, numbers, and important info. are very much needed in the Ferrari world!

    Thanks.

    Hi Michael,

everything's fine over here. Just can't wait for the snow to disappear and the salt being washed away, so that I can pull out the 308 again! Thanks for your kind words about the registry - gives me a good push to continue with it :)

I have owned a 1980 308GTBi for nine years. Red with Black. Just turned 33K miles. It has been near trouble free and a blast to drive. We removed all the smog junk and installed bypass pipes with a Tubi exhaust with the 30K major service. I have owned many fast cars in the last 40 years and this 308 is not slow. Not a drag car but it is not supposed to be either. Also put on 16" wheels from a QV. Kept all the original parts for safe keeping so it would be easy to go back if I wanted.

VIN #32217 on my 1980 308 GTBi. Built May 1980. I bought this from the third owner in 2000 with 26K on it. Now just turned 33K. Did a major service engine out in 2006. Tranny rebuild in 2008. Also added Stebro headers at that time. Sounds unreal for a 308. Some older pics of this 308 on martini-italiaferrari.com

Your car looks awesome! Did you recess that front bumper? I'm sure you've seen the conversations about how many 1980 308 GTBi's were actually made. I have collected info on 13 so far, others claim to have more. Either way, it is a rare car and one of the best looking Ferrari's made. Love to hear those headers some day, I have made some similar mods and the sound really is great.

Thanks for the complement. Yes I did pull in both bumpers. Rear was easy. Just removed the spacer blocks. That pulls it in 1 1/2 inches. The long studs can be a problem if not taken care of. The front I did while fixing the front spoiler. Not real easy to do. Changed the bumper struts to shorter ones. Bumped a curb and needed to respray the bottom of the spoiler. I should post some new pics of the car. I'll try as soon as I can find some free time. Also added a roof spoiler I bought new. Not cheap but I think it adds alot.
