I do not use treadlock of any of the nuts and bolts with the exception of break calipers or high speed parts such as transaxle. Someone else may tell you otherwise. I have not had any issues... dont crank down on parts as some of them are delicate. Be specially careful around the radiators.

Yes the cylinders look right as 1 is passenger side. Here are some pictures.

I just read your question about the sealer material. Its a special white sealer ( I cant remember the name) I will get it for you, very thin application, it goes a long way. Make sure you just place a almost transparent layer, otherwise it makes a huge mess and its really hard to clean up later.

    Stay tuned

Enginefxr recommended Permatex Ultra Gray so that's what I used. Very thin layer and it came out nicely. I don't think the seal between the engine/trans is crucial since it's not really holding anything.

I put seal on it, but you may be right. The challenge car does have one section in the mated section that needs to be sealed... check closely...I am going from memory.

Help, can anyone tell me which firing sensor goes on which side of the block? I don't see any markings on them.

Nevermind, I realized after pulling up the drawing on Ricambiamerica that there is two sides of the harness and that makes it easy.

I don't want to make any assumptions but do the colors of the male and female connectors match? Even if I tried that theory they won't all match. There is a gray, blue and black connector, the 3 that are circled that go to either the throttle position sensor, cam sensor or firing sensor. Anyone have any info on where these go?

You are doing a CH 355 aren't you? If so that's the wrong diagram for the 2.7 Motronic (that is the 5.2 pic) there are 2 ECUs one on each side of the engine compartment near the tail lights. It might make more sense if you look at the 2.7. There are 2 TPS 1 for each ECU and one cam sensor that feeds info to both ECUs. The pic in post 42 shows what and where the cam sensor is, ie; just to the left of the arrow, blue plug. You can 1 of the TPS in the pic also just to the left of the oil filter the little black box/black plug attached to the back side of the #5 throttle body.

    NO, this is a 355 5.2. It is a 1996. No CH.

While you have it out take time to clean everything... Your gearbox needs some loving ;-)

No kidding. What would you recommend as the best way to do that? Brake cleaner? I'm afraid of damaging plastics with that stuff though.

Break cleaner works great but yes need to worry about rubber parts. If used make sure you blow it dry with air just to make sure fluid does not stay wet agaist rubber parts. Electric cleaner for contacts and plugs.

Simple green works great also and hose it down with water... Make sure all holes are plugged and and use light spray to rinse off.

    good luck. and great work

Well, did a little cleaning on the gearbox with some RC car cleaner I had left over that is safe for plastics and electronics but ran out before I was done. Looks a lot better.

Question though, in picture number 8 in the lineup above you can see the main harness that runs to the ECU. Does it run straight off the front like shown or does it go down behind the cam belt with the alternator wiring?

Check your Transaxle boots closely they look a little larger than they should from the picture. This is a great time to address the issue if needed. You can get boot kits. The heat from the header eats the rubber and causes it to swell at speed. You dont want it to break or leak... big mess.

Dont want to take your focus off the engine, just add it to your list at the end.

The boots don't look the best of shape but may have to do for now. It would be a great time to do them when the engine is out like this though. There are no holes in them.

Squeeze them in your end and listen for air rushing out. You can do it with the engine in later but its much easier now. The kits are VW kits, believe it or not so they are not Ferrari prices. ;-)

    Have fun.
