I good friend gave me 6 new Bosch oil filters #72102 as a gift recently. He works at a German car parts wholesale distributor. He says he researched it in depth and these filters ar supposeto work on my '83 QV. I can find nothing to confirm this on line. Does anyone know if these filters will work? I do not have the heart to hand them back to him.

Meanwhile, I do have a Baldwin 253 to use on my current oil change. The last one was a UFI.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

Lots of companies list their filter as good for Ferrari based only on gasket diameter and thread size and pitch. They are not aware of the need for the stand pipe and non return valve. The only filters I am aware of that have the pipe and valve are UFI, Baldwin and Fram.

    Curiousity runs my life...

Could one hold filter base up & fill it completely with oil, turn it back base down quickly to drain. And see how much oil dumps out measuring how much remains. If it doth have standpipe, most would stay in the filter. Or?

This could be experimented with on the old oil/filter at the beginning of the oil change.

Indeed. A filter without a standpipe will yield a very unpleasant surprise upon removal.

I was handed a box of Frams today - do you recall the Fram part number used for 308s?

    Thanks in-advance.

I just looked at my previous filter. It was NOT a UFI. It's a WIX. And I can see down the center it has no stand pipe tube like the Baldwin I just put in. The Bosch's I have do not have the tube either.

Since my (last) WIX was in there for the last oil/change period, I assume no "standpipe" tube does not hurt the flow or filtering performance, correct?
BTW - I waited a good 45 min to spin off the WIX filter - just a few drops of spillage.

Not to be mean but TRASH the Frams. They are garbage. Go with Baldwin aroung $15. As a matter of fact I have 4 new Baldwin filters I need to get rid of if anyone wants them.

The standpipe is in there so when you first turn over the motor after sitting for a short while, you will have oil already in the filter to flow to the engine. Mo oil=Less wear on engine parts.

What I used to do is take an awl and poke a hole in the top of the old filter, letting it sit for a little while, then removing the filter (just in case the standpipe didn't hold it). Sure beat trying to mop up the oil under the carbs.

Depends on the "leak" rate of the Anti-Drainback Valve -- how long since the system was last pressurized to when you cut it in half?

Really, it's much more important to have a good working ADV, as, if that doesn't work well, the whole oiling system back to the pump can empty itself (i.e., the system has to reprime itself at start-up). Having the standpipe is just a little bonus that will give some benefit on restarts after only short off periods, even if the ADV is a little leaky, so no downside IMO to using a filter with one.

    I'll take the 4 Baldwins...send them on!

That is the ONLY filter to use, oil and air as well .....they sell at Truck Service Centers where they call me Olan, for some reason.....LOLOL!

I have these giant 24" inch 'Channel Lock' pliers never any problem!

This filter shortened up my first track day. The car was fully warmed up and the pressure dropped to a bit less than HALF.
Look at the photos and decide if you will take any filter that will screw on.

When i got home, i used a good mechanical gauge to test the pressure... it was way low.

Next, i pulled the oil pressure relief plunger and spring, cleaned them up and restarted....still way low.

Last, i pulled the fram and cut it open.

I went back to Baldwin, problem solved.

    hth,
    chris

WOW! this really turned into an eye opening thread.

So far, Bosch did not even make it to the back stretch. I can see that my Bosch's have no stand pipe too.

I have a bunch of Baldwins coming now so the UFI's will have to be delayed a few years. But, that should be no big deal as I have been putting only 1,500 mi/year on my car and do not track it.

Totally agree, people are jus using wrong arguments for standpipe.

It is very common to think that oil is nearer to engineparts as you start engine. I hope there is no one to say this. If so, Please tell me how much does the Ferrari V8 oilpump produces oil per second at 1000rpm?

As I see standpipe is it holds filter "under" oil for the two reason:
    One, reason shown previous pictures...
Two, It keeps dirty oil inside filter and this does not drain back to pump.
