I used to really like what he had to say but now I just think the guy is insane, he has gone on huge rants about how digital will be dead in the next 2 years and everyone will be back to film.

MP matter, but really...not that much.

A camera is only as good as the glass you put in front of it.

    I have a canon 30D and a 70-200 2.8. The 30D is only 8.2MP , but i can crop a TON and still get great results.

If you want to make MASSIVE posters, it's better to have a bit more MP, but other than that i personally could care less about MP.

Likewise, for digital, the glass is only as good as the body behind it.

Is there any surprise that I get better prints when I shoot my 35mm with 25 or 50 ISO film than when I shoot through the same glass with my 40D?

It would be better to have a larger sensor than a higher pixel count.

May I ask what makes you so sure you can refute all these statements? Also are you yourself a professional? If you are, then more power to you and please post this picture that has been cropped, and is your hottest seller. Also both those statements in bold were made by professional photographers I have met or read up on. Either on blogs or other informative websites, I am sorry I didn't save the quotes as I knew one day they would come in handy.

I have been shooting film for over 20 years now and I love my nikon cameras. I started out with a 35mm film camera and wouldn't give that up for anything. I also have a digital Nikon. I agree regarding the pixals. I Perfer a larger optical zoom. I have blown up a number of photos with my Nikon digital and so far haven't needed anything billboard sized!!! There is a Nikon package that sells at Costco with the camera and I think it is two lenses for 1000.00. I have a friend that has it and loves it.
I have heard don't buy cameras or electronics over the net. B and H I think it is camera equipment out of New York has great stuff and pretty good prices. They are also very helpful. I have also found the guys at Best Buy to be awesome in helping with cameras.

    Bump.

Wanted to purchase the camera locally in Toronto instead of Dubai, so I waited to get back and settled here. Tomorrow is finally the long awaited-day!

After much reading and asking many annoying 'newbie' questions, I've decided on the Nikon D90 with the kit lens (18-105mm). I'm just more comfortable with the Nikon body as opposed to the Canon as I've had a bit of practice on both.

The best advice I got was to stay away from Ebay. I've decide to purchase it from a local store with a great warranty just in case something happens within the next 3-4 years. All in all, its about $1400 + 13% tax. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but I figure it will be a great camera which I can build upon prior to upgrading later down the road. The D300 will be a bit much for me at this time.

Sometime soon, I will also be picking up the "Photography Bible", a book suggested by Maranelloboy (Chris) earlier in this thread.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and helping with what seemed like an impossible decision! :)

I'll get some pictures up when they are worthy.

    Cheers,
    Clyde

Ebay is just a site, it depends who you deal with. If there is someone with 200,000 feedbacks at 99.5% positive, you got a good deal buying something... Only don't buy from people with back feedback (example: 2000 feedbacks 60% positive)
