I was looking for a new toy car and was not looking for a Ferrari at all, this is when I came across a 1995(last year of ODB1 I think?) red F355 for approximately 30k. I haven't checked anything mechanically but reading these forums it seems as if they are prone to valve issues and headers cracking. It does have quite a bit of mileage 86,000! miles. So even with these issues and with quite a bit of mileage, how much would it take to make it road worthy and is it worth it?
Thanks for your input and time.

That price is about half of market value (even with the economic downturn). I'd be suspicious...

Price probably reflects the mileage. These cars become unsellable at that level and above.

The 355 is known for header problems, bad cats, sticky interiors, and worst of all bad valve guides. A competent shop should be able to a compression and leakdown test as part of a comprehensive Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) and give you a feel about where the car is.

I disagree with the previous owner about the 1/2 price. IF it had typical low mileage the statement would be correct, but the mileage really throws it on the outlier curve.

The GOOD thing is that there's probably been enough time and miles thrown at the car to find any weak points already.

If you know the VIN post it up, there's a good registry that might give you some info. Beware a salvage title, check it!

figure a major, headers, and valve guide fix will cost you $25k. you then still have a 80k mile car that's hard to sell. For $55-60k you can get a low mileage, recent major, newer headers, and fixed valve guides. Sponsor Sports Car Company has a really nice 355 Spider for $59k and taking lower offers.

Which blows my mind as how in the hell under current market conditions can a 360 be worth 80-100k and people think a 95 355 is still worth 60k? It doesn't make sense to me. IMO if the 360 is worth say 80k then a 355 should be worth 40k and a 430 should be worth 150k.

    Does that mean 348's are worth $30K, 328's $20K and 308's $10K? :D:D

I think there are a ton more 360s on the market, not very many 355 Berlinettas or GTS, plenty of spiders. Also the design and feel may have something to do with it, for one that likes a more refined Ferrari and the design style coupled with 430s prices coming down so fast and the significant performance upgrade they offer, that may be compressing 360 prices. I know if I were looking to trade out of my 355 (not happening), I would be looking into a 430 rather than a 360.

In each of the cars mentioned on the post, from 308's to 430's, as we all know you get what you pay for. Sure there are some great deals out there at this time, still have my eye's out for that perfect 550, but still have to do ALL of your homework in your purchase, unless of course you have the additional income that you can piss away:)

The condition is the most important ............ there are plenty of trashed f-cars with low miles or high miles ............ IMO the odometer says nothing, if the condition does not support it.

Ultimately if one can get both real actual low miles and condition, then it will not be cheap ........... but then one will be afraid to drive such a car and put miles on it ...... :(

There is not that much margin between the cars. 308-328-345-355 are all inline with each other +5 to 15k. The 360 and 430 will fall into this line someday too, the 360 is almost there, 430 has much higher relative depreciation potential.

Precisely! ............. the 355 should never be worth 1/2 of a 360 ......... the 360 uses the exact same motor with 2mm added to the crank and then some bolt-ons (ie. intake manifold, variable exhaust cam .... ) ......... in the UK the 360 and the 355 are almost dead even price wise ...... ;)

actually I do understand why people don't drive them ........ it is almost like having a scale 355 model .... for some ..... it is almost as much fun looking at it and touching it .............;)

Ah yes, mileage. Somehow I missed that.

IMHO, the 360's only advantage over a 355 (please don't hurt me) is that the belts can be done with the engine in. Majors are significantly less expensive at the shop, or easier to do at home. Other than than, the styling leaves something to be desired... especially the nose. Yes, I prefer the 348's nose to the 360. Maybe the engine peaking out from the glass makes up for that... but I am yet to overcome my aversion to that butterface. Shoot me.

I would think a 355 that has reached 80k miles would have had all its issues come to light by now even valve guides. Right ?

If a PPI shows nothing major wrong and all it needs is its major then you get a 355 for less than $40k...as you can get a major done for far below $10k.

Sounds like a good deal to me.
