When is too soon to touch a new Ferrari paint job, with

    -- soap
    -- wax

Has any pro detailer seen a new Ferrari finish that could be improved by an amateur's fiddling with clay, paint cleaner, polish?

Not sure about delivery of new Ferraris to Japan, but to the U.S., the shipping time and time clearing customs is more than enough time for the paint to cure. Most new Ferraris get delivered here with 30 to 100 miles on the odometer, due to initial testing at the factory and various short car movements during the shipping/delivery process. So, I think washing with soap would be okay almost as soon as you take delivery on one.

The first time my black 430 got detailed, I was amazed at how much better it looked. We have a guy in our Mid-Atlantic region called DetailGuy (real name Chris) who does an amazing job. Maybe you could fly him over to Tokyo? (just kidding).
Here is a link to some of his before & after pics of a 365 GT 2+2 car he did a while back:

And here is a pic of my 430 looking shiny.

I'd be curious to see how sensitive the demand for his services is in response to the global financial meltdown.

95% of brand new Ferraris I've seen could still be improved, especially if the dealership's detailer already touched it. Even if the car's 100% perfect and there are no scratches, swirls, contaminants stuck to the clearcoat, etc, a nice coat of wax would make it look even better. On a Grigio Alloy car, you may very well not find anything wrong with the paint. But if it's black, I can almost guarantee you the paint can be improved.

I was intrigued enough to load up the vid, but turned it off in disgust after a minute or two..... Why?

    1. He's firing a friggin' pressure washer all over it - I'm pretty sure the general wisdom here is that can be a very, very bad thing.....
    2. He's only using a single bucket at the washing stage. Again, two buckets seems to be the wisdom for eliminating scratches.

    So I stopped watching :)

    Cheers,
    Ian

No worries - I didn't mean to "attack" you, just note that I wasn't impressed with his technique.... I presume he goes on at some point about the price of the "Crazy wax" he's applying.

    Cheers,
    Ian

The black 1968 365 GT belongs to a fellow fchatter (BryanP) in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Look at the reflection of the white fence in the side of his car in this pic.
His car actually had a "mirror finish" when DetailGuy was done with it.
Amazing results for a paint job that old, IMHO.

For your interior use this. I have for several years now. I used to use "Hide Food", but this is my favorit. It is wonderful and will keep it like brand new inside!

Congratulations on your car! You will love too!

    Hi Toggie,

Thanks for your expertise. Your link to Chris's 365 is mind-blowing. I looked at his site and I think I see your car in his gallery to boot.

Suddenly I think my next car may be non-metallic black

The main skill I bring to my work on a trading floor is detail-orientation so I find washing a car well very satisfying too. In the past I have paid for a carwash or detail a few times but I like to do it by hand even though I'm not as good.

I've spent 8 hours at 2 hours/weekend wash/clay/clean/polish/wax my old M5, about half done after a month. I heard my doorman talking to another resident: "He washes his car every weekend!" "No, he's still finishing the same wash he started a month ago."

Since I walk to work and take cabs when going out, even my daily driver leaves the house about once a week and the Ferrari even less... it might be several years before the Ferrari needs anything besides soap and the odd wax. It will be a long time to wait.

Without a doubt, an owner of a new Ferrari should use Tech Shine (http://www.tech-shine.com/) This stuff is simply amazing! Talk to its owner and developer, Jim at California Detailing (http://www.californiadetailing.com) about all the proprietary products he has and sells for both the interior and exterior. The Ferrari Club just had a tech session at his shop and the stuff he uses is second-to-none! Very very impressive!

Call me crazy, but I own 3 black Ferraris and I would/will use nothing but Tech Shine and other CA Detailing products on them. Period.

The web site is all mouth and no trousers. Millions of animations and sound effects, but the biggest picture of the product in action is like 400x250? Why doesn't he just do stripes of various waxes/products on the car and give you a 3000x2000 jpg after application and 3 months down the lnie to really see what you're getting?

I have respect for someone who can develop a new product. But I don't think I have a common thought process with someone who'd develop the product, make sure its safe, then not got the last little effort to let people see what he's selling?
