I take the risk of making a fool of myself and predict: Red Bull will fight for the championship this year. Their new car seems to be really really good, we all know about Adrian Newey's skill in making the best out of new rules. While we've heard from several top drivers that their new cars require a certain adaption, Vettel and Webber say that the new Red Bull doesn't feel any different than the old cars. There's a long article in the current issue of Auto Motor & Sport highlighting the features of the Red Bull, they too predict a surprise. IIRC, they accumulated the most testing kilometers up to now, and looking at the times, Vettel is constantly quick. With a bit of luck from their point of view, Ferrari and McLaren will struggle with their new cars and we'll see Vettel (not sure about Webber) win more than once.

My prediction: Vettel will end up among the top four at the end of the season. Any takers for a bet? I don't have $10k to spend (and I don't want to leave FChat after losing :p), but I'd be in with a bottle of our local Schlappeseppl beer, which the world brewer's association deems the second-best beer in the world! :D

I'm in for a bet. The cost of a six pack of Schlappeseppl vs. an actual six pack. Also, are you anywhere near where you can get Perminator? I've had it and it to is very good.

Red Bull will be a contender for the title i think so, but keep in mind that BMW spend all their moneys since canada 08 on their 09 car. And they where in the title race until shangai...

    Don't rule them out yet;).

I'd bet a bottle of Jagermeister (IMPOSSIBLE to get here in spain) if they finish above Red Bull. Or vice versa with your 6 pack of schlapesppele beer. :)

Should I predict that the car that most closely matches Bernie's spec will get the least penalties? ;)

On any account, here's hoping that this year picks up where '08 left off. It's exciting to have 6-8 potential winners (or more) on any given weekend.

The only Joker in this is KERS. We know the Renault system is not as complete as BMW first and MBZ second, so that might be an issue. But I agree that RED BULL should be very strong and with Vettel they have fresh blood that should really shine. Plus whenever rule changes have happened (i.e. 1998) Newey does a great job.

So? They'll soon run out of their allotted test miles and the others will catch up.

So is Glock in his first outing in the Toyota. Who, I believe from your post above don't have as much test miles as RB. Based on that I'd say Toyota is ahead of RB. No?

With a bit of luck any of these teams/drivers could win three this year. The thing with Ferrari and McLaren is they usually need bad luck not to be fighting for the win.

We all know testing doesn't really mean anything. The real test will be the first few tests and practices at Melbourne. Only then will we know who's going to be out in front.

top 4? i seriously doubt it considering he'll be racing against the likes of alonso, hamilton, raikonnen, massa, and heikki (hey he is driving a mclaren after all), and let's not forget robert kubica in what could be a much improved BMW chasis.

Anything possible and I'd like to see Vettel succeed, just not too soon.

Yup I agree, with what little we have to go on with such limited testing this year I suspect Toyota are looking very good..

Don't know that they'll be title contenders, but IMO the entire field will be extremely competitive this year with the exception of STR and Force India. I'm personally hedging my fantasy bets largely on Red Bull, Toyota and Williams with a safety fallback on BMW.

Read an interesting article. KERS is overrated. Yes in theory it would be the magic bullet to allow passing and some extra speed in qualifying, but the reality looks different:

Not only is it hard to package and leave the car at the weight limit, but it also eats up tires and is not an easy fit with the overall setup. Toyota figured that out already and dropped it entirely.

    Regarding Red Bull:

Title contender is probably a bit far fetched. I see them as strong contenders for Bronze, err sorry, 3rd place. :)

Their car is going like gangbusters (Vettel beating Massa by a full second) and they got the young Senna/Schumacher/Alonso in it, so yes, they'll be good. But I still think the title comes down to McLaren vs Ferrari. Red Bull will duke it out for 3rd with Sauber. Renault will be 5th.

Brilliant drive by monteiro. If memory served right he qualified somewhere down at 18th or so, and managed to get up to third by the end of the race! in a MF!

I almost wonder if Vettel is getting over hyped. Webber is no slouch and has a ton of experience with the team. I'm not sure which will end up being the team lead as the season progresses. I think Vettel is awesome. I'm just not convinced he is black jesus yet... He won't be top 4 I think. too many other talented teams with talented drivers. That doesn;'t take away from what he can do. he just won't be top 4 I'm willing to bet.

Vettel will be good, as will Red Bull as a team. But I always take testing times with a grain of salt. You never know exactly was is being tested (technology, tires). Sometimes testing sessions are just experiments to see if a certain thing works, or the drivers might not be pushing the car 100%. Just like the preseason of other professional sports (ie - playing non-starters, prospects, etc); just look at the Detroit Lions most recent preseason.

The Vettel/Webber driver combination is the most interesting this year. Webber has beaten decisively every previous teammate he's had (possible exception of Heidfeld). It'll be interesting to see how the two stack up.

I'm thinking Newey's design will be the one revered and copied this year. Vettel is a gifted driver... I think he gets his 'wings' this year (couldn't resist.)

Newey has always been a top engineer and frankly I'm surprised he hasn't been more competitive; vettel gave STR their maiden victory last year and should give RB theirs this year. As we all know these tests are always filled with conjecture and speculation; could the vettel/RB combo be the schumey/benetton of this decade? We will soon see but I hope we have as many different race winners as possible.

PS-I despise the KERS system and that can be a major factor this year.....

Webber is the new Bourdais. You can't overhype Vettel.

I was thinking the same thing. But some memories I try to suppress, they're too painful. Memories like Nuerburgring 99...
