It's not uncommon for the oil temp sensor to fail. Cheap and easy bolt in replacement job.

    That's the oil temperature gauge.

Couple of things to bear in mind, John. The 348 holds a lot of oil, and the majority of the oil is in the dry sump tank, not in the hot engine. All of the oil in the tank has already passed from the engine, and through the oil cooler. The sending unit for the oil temperature gauge is on the tank, not on the engine, so the gauge isn't reading the temperature of the oil in the engine, it's reading the temperature of the oil in the tank. The oil temp reading doesn't normally go up even to halfway unless the car is being hard, or sitting for an extended period in traffic, on a hot day.

It's also fairly common for the oil temp reading to be erratic, or to not function at all, if the oil tank isn't properly grounded to the frame.

I don't think you have a problem, John.

If you want to visually check the sending unit, it's on the very bottom of the right side of the oil sump tank, with one wire going to it. If the tank isn't grounded properly, you can do an easy test by making up a jumper wire with a couple of clips on the ends, and hooking them up to nice clean spots on the tank and the frame. Then drive the car for a while and see if the reading looks different. If it does, you can make up a permanent ground wire for the tank. This repair is listed in a factory service bulletin from August 1992.
