So, Go to fill up the 355 for the first time in a year. In Oregon you can't pump your own gas, some stupid law they came up with 35 years ago here to give the meth heads jobs. Dude puts the nozzle in, pulls the triggers and gas literally sprays all over the car. I'm like, what the @#$&!!. Are you f******g kidding me?? I knew I should have never let that bozo fill the tank. A quick drive over to Walmart to buy some microfiber cloths to wash it down with. I had to stop the guy from using the squeegy and papertowl to wipe it off with. This Self Serve ban is silliness. NJ is the only state with idiots supporting this law. I think there may be a few other countries with this too? Japan?
Sorry to hear that Sean!! What an idiot!!! In the Middle East Arab countries, there are no self serve gas stations at all! But I have never heard of an actual ban in a state in the US! That is the dumbest ban I have heard of!!
I never allow those careless gas station attendants in NJ to even come near my F-car. I did once, though. It was during the maiden voyage of my first Ferrari from Washington, DC up to NY. I had literally taken delivery that day. The NJ attendant dropped my aluminum gas cap not once... not twice... but three -- count 'em, three -- times before I told the guy to leave and not return. The gas cap was not destroyed but scratched and nicked -- especially irksome to an otherwise giddy brand new owner. Whether it's Oregon or New Jersey, I think people will have enough respect to know when they see a Ferrari not to bust balls. I would say ignore the law and give it a try. You have a right to protect your property.
I had no intention of letting the guy pump the gas. However, he was such a 'go getter' I wasn't fast enough to grab it from him. Funny how this was the only time they come running over to pump it. Typically you sit there for 5 minutes or more. I usually just start pumping it myself and THEN they come running at which point I say too late, I got it. $500 fine for pumping your own gas LOL. I've yet to find anyone who has received a ticket for this or an officer who's ever written one. I washed it again with soap and water when I got home but still smell gas on the paint and the soft top too.
When you are on the road in NJ - you might be screwed. When I'm home, I buy my own gas in 5 gallon containers and fill up the sucker myself in my garage. If I tank at a station, I get out of my car and look over the person pumping the gas, I'm polite to them and it is usually returned. One time I was getting gas in my daily driver and the guy could not figure out how to put back the gas cap onto the threads, so out of my rearview mirrow I see him just shoveling the cap into the hole and trying to just shove the gas door closed to keep it all in. That pissed me off and I had to tell him as if I was schooling a kid, except he was an older dude -I looke dhim in the eye and said - "Don't ever do that again". He goes in broken English "Gas, no work, dunno". After he saw that I was not gonna make a scene he goes in perfect english "ok, sir, then you have a nice day" ........ WTF? ha ha
As a Washingtonian who regularly travels to Oregon, I NEVER allow them to pump my gas! They did much the same thing to my Benz - left the pump on full blast, with gas running all over the place (including the finish). So I always 'top off' in Washington before heading to the Peoples Republic of Oregon so I don't have to let them do it. TWO states in the whole USA don't allow self-pump... ridiculous.... and NEVER in my F328 that requires a very delicate touch when filling up. God forbid! Jedi
I live in OR so unfortunately I have no choice. I haven't had a bad experience yet though. A gas attendant (who happened to be a car guy) once told me the stupid law here allows owners to pump gas BUT they (the attendants) are supposed to put in and put the nozzle out (although most of them don't tell you this). He let me pump the gas. When I finished, I waited for a minute to make sure no drop comes out of the nozzle when he took it out. The point is, maybe you can ask the attendant if you can do it yourself...FWIW. Ron
Get out of the car immediately when pulling up to the pump and crack it open yourself. Stand around. Also, go to Costco, they have delicate hands.
The only saving grace about that law, is that during the mucky, rainy season (August 1 through July 26) you don't have to get wet. When I lived there, the filler section of my "very average" Honda was just brutalized by those meth addicts. It's a B.S. law, 100%.
Wow, that's bad - I'd have been livid. As a way around the moronic law - could you visit the gas station in a 'normal' car and ask them to fill up a couple of Jerry Cans for you? You could store them in your garage at home and use those to carefully fuel your F-car yourself. All the best, Andrew.
Can someone please explain to me what is happening to this country? I would have given that "tweaker" a high test 93 octane enema.
I've read the text of the law. I don't see any provision for a motorist to ever pump their own gas, HOWEVER, there is a provision for motorcyclists to pump their own gas. BUT the gas station attendant must hand them the nozzle first. When done the motorcyclist MUST hand the nozzle back to the attendant. STUPID. Clearly designed to give someone a job. They try very hard to make it appear this is just for safety. VERY dangerous to pump your own gas in a state with weather like this. You know, because we are the only ones that have rain and snow and slick wet concrete. (Like ice apparently)
Tashier, I never read the text...bec. I agree (it is stupid) and am "stuck" here in OR anyway. I just unlock and put the gas cap myself, and the good thing with my 328 is gas couldn't be pumped on full blast bec. it could only take "low pressure," minimizing the risk of spill. Ron
One of the first things I found out about Oregon when I moved here. Hated the law 18 years ago when I got here, and hate it now. It's asinine. In 48 other states it's perfectly normal to pump your own gas. What still surprises me are the number of people I talk to here, that actually like the law. Mystifying. Everywhere else I've lived you could go to self serve or full serve and CHOOSE to have someone do it if you wanted to. Guess what? Most full serve areas are deserted. The free market chose the alternative. DIY. I agree that Costco usually has pretty good attendants (although I still hop out to do the cap ASAP). Usually several of them are on duty too, unlike many stations that are understaffed for rushes, and you wait around for 10 minutes. I've also read that Costco has the cleanest underground tanks of any fueling companies. Not sure as to the truth of that, but I've read or been told so.
Read the same thing...IIRC that one of the refueler truck drivers said their filters were the cleanest.
I have found the same to be true. I've taken a few polls on some forums I am on and the result is always that for the most part people in Oregon and NJ still want full serve while all other states prefer to pump it themselves. I think they are honestly scared to pump it themselves here. They've been brainwashed to think how dangerous it is. You should hear all the excuses, it's dangerous, it's too cold, I don't want to smell like gas, what about great great granny or wheelchair guy. On and on. Good grief.
I agree with the Oregon law being stupid. I hated having to wait for an attendant and I don't trust them with my car. I moved to Arizona and it's so much nicer to be able to pump my own gas. However, my wife wants to move back to Oregon eventually... I lived in Corvallis from 2003 to 2007, I wonder if I ever saw your 328. I recall a red one with a vanity plate that was parked on 9th street (I think it was 9th)...
IIRC the law came about almost 40 years ago when a state senators daughter hurt/burned/killed can't remember which but I think she was killed. in a gas station fill up accident. He pushed the law through after this happened.
