It was too sudden / metallic / loud not to be a metallic piece disengaging / falling into the door...
So I followed ( and again I owe you big time) FBB's door removal instructions ( though I would add to those to mark with blue marker threads before / after nuts to make sure the door striker and door lock adjusters are set properly when putting it all back together ) and sure enough, one of the metal sleeves that slides up / down the rear rail of the driver's side window was sitting inside the door frame, along with the bolt and another metallic piece....
See pics in links, but it is pretty scary to see the amount of duct tape they used in the door... and I though I did things "redneck style" more often than I should........

Oh, forgot to take pics of my new "tape job" , but I used silver duct tape so as to make it even more "Red Neck" Style ;)
    Cheers :)

Great effort to investigate, I applaud your willingness to DIY the door panels as they are not that much different than many common production cars - many of the same techniques are used in Toyotas, Hondas, Audis etc and that is how I learned.

So it was the rear window carrier that became dislodged due to a cap bolt that backed off?
I'm not completely clear on what it screws into, either a tapped hole or fastener, but you may want to consider using loctite blue (242) when you reattach it.

There was a separate metal back-plate with a threaded hole. I was considering the blue loctite but in case I did something wrong I did not want to take a chance at having something essentially locked in place for life... I figure it took 9 years for this to happen... should last another 9 and I can do it again in 30 min or less ;)
FBB's instructions made it easy. all credit goes to him :)
    Cheers :)

Claudio- Next time a lock washer will help and not be as difficult to remove as locktite.

Incidentally, if I were you, I would just post the photos rather than linking them. That way in the future if your website is deleted or altered, someone could still use the photos from the site to help them with a repair. If you look closely as you post photos, you will notice you can start out with quite large photos in jpeg format and the attachments software will lower the size automatically to less than 100 kbs, usually around 50 kbs, when it uploads. Memory halves Moore's Law, which says processor speed doubles every 18 months or so. The price of memory is being halved every 6-9 months. I have 1 TB external hard drive for which I paid only $100. Last year they were $200+. Just saw a 2 TB external drive for $200. With internal and external drives, I have 4 TBs of memory for my PC, most of it taken up with extremely high res WW-I aviation photos.

Lee- I think that was Moore's Law of Female Companionship. That was eventually trumped by Mrs Moore's Law of Emasculation.
