"FOTA had called for a points system overhaul after it conducted a survey in which fans asked for a greater gap between the points for first and second places to encourage drivers to go for victory." Oh my, fans wanting actual racing, and drivers vying for victory!!! What do they know
IMO the bigger news is the creation of the budget teams who will have greater freedom of design. That is of course if fota allows these changes....
I'am so angry that already these cretin's have spoilt what is looking to be a great season, great timing well done Why not make the Team's declare who there #1 drivers are as well.
Relax we still have Button to Cheer for! Go Button! maybe they should announce who will win the 2009 season now so we all will know.
If they gave more points for first place then we wouldnt have this dicussion. (The 12-9 system that was proposed). You reward WINS and you reward consistency at the same time. If this was in place last year Massa would have won and rightfully so with 6 wins as well.
Yeh, too right arghhhhhhh ....Go Button! thanks mate I need chilling out. Why do I love a sport that is controlled by muppets, that think we are muppets..
+1. This will make for more desperate passes for the win. Now get rid of pit stops and have all those passes be on the track rather than in the pits and call it good. However, it would be difficult to engineer a more dramatic finish to the season than 2008 with the old points system. I do think it would be funny to have one driver clinch with 6 races to go, then just sit out the rest of the season in the commentary booth talking about how great it is to be 2009 champion.

[/QUOTE] +1 Tundra, thats exactly what im talking about. especially if your #2 driver on the team was not up to par and you had no shot at the constructors title.
spot on. consistant performance should decide the winner so basically theyve ignored the teams (eg the contestants) and the fans (the people who pay the money for this to work) oh well - nothing new there then is there
I did read it, but something isn't necessarily true just because you say so, it's only your opinion and it's one that is obviously not shared by quite a lot of people.
You should join me in ALMS and Le Mans prototype, those boys play for keeps and are not part of the F1 Soap Opera. http://www.planetlemans.com/2009/03/17/sebring-12-hours-more-images/
Im just trying to see the other side here and trying to figure out the FIA's method of madness. I guess what they are trying to do is reward the fastest driver a title period. You win the most you should be rewarded. Cosistency and precision driving will still be rewarded but only as a team effort for the contructors title. I dont know.... 12-9 system is still my vote for the best all around cure of the point system.
WTF? why make the points rule better and then say nahhhh actually we'll piss everyone off just a little bit more by scrapping the points system and make everything more complicated and worse. Honestly what actually do Bernie and Max know about F1? NOTHING!!!!!!!!!
i agree with a point system that is weighted more towards the winner. i think the 10/6/4/3/2/1 or a 12/8/6/5/4/3/2/1 would be better that just total wins. that way you are rewarding wins and consistency at the same time. if a driver wraps up the title early the teams will have to keep his fire lit for the constructors title. however, i doubt the title will be wrapped up before japan, as it looks like there will be 4 or more contenders this year. anyway, i am tired of all the speculation. Lets get it on!!!!!!
What he said - has there ever been a pre-race season that seemed to drag and drag and drag on soooo long?
If one knew what their actual goals are they might make more sense. Used to be just the money, now who knows. I suspect it has a lot to do with heading off FOTA.
I think team orders will play more into this system. If a driver has driver has four wins and his partner has zero wins you know he will never win a race if the #1 driver is close to him.
I can't wait for a #2 driver to pull over and let the #1 driver pass and win the race. THERE IS GOING TO BE A BIG CONTROVERSY.
I foresee that the proposed point system will only last one season before they come back to points with a greater weight on first place. The "wins" system may lead drivers to more agressive driving but also on the negative side. If driver (a) is leading driver (b) with the latter having no clear overtaking opportunity or not being fast enough for P1, driver (b) may simply go for an optimistic passing manouver with a much higher risk of taking both cars out. Drivers may go for an all or nothing approach when it comes to the race lead.
