I'm going to wait till Friday practice to make my prediction because honestly I have to fricken clue. I am still pretty sure Ferrari and McLaren will on top, with BMW and Honda close behind.

Dedication is hard to measure, so let's ignore that.

Let's define "faster" and you have yourself a bet. Faster as in more fastest laps or in an overall better grid position or as in better racing results? You pick, I will accept because Kimi will drive the snot out of the car and beat Massa. I could be wrong of course, but here's my gauntlet.
    :)

And no, I don't do 10k bets. Nice bottle of wine or a sixpack of beer (hey, STRMike, what about it?) will do.

There is a reason for it: They're not fast.

They still haven't even decided whether to use KERS or not. Think about that: If you want to use the heavy and clonky KERS you have to design the car around it. If you leave it off, you have created a car that isn't optimized for it.

I'm not writing BMW off, but their original goal (according to their German schedule defined when they took over from Sauber) of going for the Championship this year seems far fetched right now.

Dr. M. T. is still singing that song as of today's press report. And he wouldn't lie, would he?
In that they started work on this year's car so early and given their record I wouldn't write them off yet.
On a related note; will the development freeze/restrictions in place this year make it impossible for a team that gets off to a poor start to catch up?
A team with a hot initial set-up might be in the cat-bird's seat as far as the driver's championship goes given the new point structure.
    Interesting times.

I'll leave that question to Frank Williams to answer...

I have been wondering about that myself. Obviously computer models and wind tunnel tests can still go on, but apart from that the new developments can only be put in place at the GP's Friday practices. So while it won't stop development, it will certainly slow it down.

So McLaren still have a chance to play catch up and Brawn GP will go backwards as the season progresses unless they soon find money for their development work.

I thought wind tunnel time was also limited during the season.

I know they talked about it, but I'm not sure there actually was a decision. And even if there was, how do you measure and enforce that?

And besides: There is always CFD, which I think has meanwhile a greater importance.

Isnn't the size of the CFD departments limited now, too? Anyway, there are a lot of open questions with today's CFD systems as the formulas for fluid systems are often nearly impossible to solve (...don't ask how I know...), and what happens if you trust your mathematical models and simulations too much can be seen with the current rear wing of the McLarens...

I didn't hear the CFD department size has limitations (which means just that, I didn't hear it :)). IMHO that matters not terribly much. In that department (as your statement exemplifies) it is not about quantity, but quality of your people. The quantitative aspect is covered by your computer.

Wind tunnels are equally not the solution to it all as Honda learned the very hard way a year ago, when the "perfect car" of the windtunnel turned out to be a dog in testing.

PS: How did your exams go? I hope you aced it.

Latest issue of MotorSport has an interesting piece on McLaren's simulation program. Of course they still claim that the 09 car is the one to beat and that the track tests confirmed all the optimistic lab predictions.
    Right:)

I can't remember exactly what the limitations were about, but if I remember correclty (which doesn't mean too much) both the number of people working there as well as the computer power was limited. I'll fire up Google and see if I can find out more. You're right about the quality of the people, but you need a bunch of (academic) worker bees to implement the solutions the geniuses found, too. Mathematical and software validation is a b****! (again, don't ask how I know!!)

Exams are on Thursday (structural dynamics) and Monday (electrical machines), and two more the following weeks... I'm slightly optimistic, but especially the electrical machines stuff drives me crazy. It's a bit bizarre to wake up at night and realize you've been dreaming about rotating and pulsating magnetic fields and the Fourier transforms thereof... :)

    It will all pass.

What's even more bizarre are my own nightmares: I'm dreaming it is exam day and I forgot to study. Or I'm in college and suddenly realize I never finished High School and now have to go back. :)

    Viel Glueck!

Alright, I run my own thread into the ground. Nice work.

I'm happy to see the many responses and we should have another thread after the qualifying session. That will show us to some degree the sandbaggers and smoke screeners.

Steve, I never make predictions, which I think is something that can only be done sensibly on the basis of having some useful knowledge and I don't think anyone has enough of that yet. Predicting the future in F1, especially this year when there have been radical changes, is just guessing. It's interesting to see what people are guessing though, and it's something we might be able revisit for a bit of fun at the end of the season. ;)
