I've heard a rumor that Hawaiian car insurance is some of the most expensive in the States.
Is this true and what companies do you locals recommend?

I don't have any real hard information to offer, but I don't think being in Hawaii is a huge factor in the cost of insurance. It is not something that comes up in discussions with my friends and customers, so I take this as an indicator that the cost is not a big issue.

One thing that can be a problem is that not all companies are able to write insurance in Hawaii.I know that a couple of the "collector car insurance" specialists cannot write policies here. I am pretty sure that Grundy will cover a car in Hawaii, so if the restrictions of collector car insurance aren't deal killers, that is a good option.

One of the few benefits of being "experienced" is the truly great insurance program offered by AARP. I have not found anyone that can even come close to their prices. Right now, I have an Alfa GTV and a Maserati QPIII insured for the road and it is very affordable. Of course, these are not very valuable cars so I can't say how they would react to a car that was worth much more, but I do not think that being in Hawaii would be all that different than being in any city on the mainland.

It's not difficult or overly expensive to get a Ferrari or Lamborghini insured in Hawaii with a national insurer provided they have, or you give them, all your other coverage - house, business, etc. What is difficult and expensive is to try to get stand-alone insurance for only a car. I've been told this is a fairly common approach even on the mainland.
