So you wouldn't mind if Alonso is real strong and wins the first race, then Kimi wins the 2nd with Massa a close 2nd, then Alonso wins the 3rd race, then Massa would have won the 4th race but DNF's so Kimi wins. Then Alonso wins again... and then Ferrari decides after less than 1/3rd of the season that they have to throw their support behind Kimi because it would be too difficult for Massa to overcome Alonso's wins? Would that be OK with you?

Or let's say McLaren make a car like they did in 06 when it was very fast, but only when it worked right. Hamilton is able to get 5 wins with it, but the rest of his finishes are all in the bottom part of the grid, with 6 DNF's. Massa has 4 wins, 5 second places, 5 3rd places and only 1 DNF... Kimi has a similar record. You'd say Hamilton was the rightful winner?

The reference was to college basketball. The championships are underway.
    Touchline? Half time oranges?
All I know for sure about cricket is that there are funny rum drinks involved.

LOL ,When I was at school along time ago,!! whilst playing football, at half time we would have some sliced up oranges.

But if you didn't like sport, you good always get a note from the nurse, to say you felt ill and then you sit it out on the touchline..:)
Ahem now get back on topic .... as we can see Mike has pointed out a scenario under the new rules, that sucks!!

Are there any scenarios (i?) that don't?
I, for one, will be surprised if this point system is in place when the flag falls. IMO this is a part of the ongoing FIA/FOTA wrangling.
Of course given the pig headedness of the powers that be we may end up stuck with this madness.

I nicked this....interesting though, respect to the original guy for working it out!!

In a fit of temporary insanity, I decided to do the sums myself. The results, for 59 championships from 1950:

12 championships would have been won by someone different under this new wins scheme (6 of those in the 1980s).
14 would have been decided earlier in the season, 3 later, and 42 at the same point.
The average season would have been won 0.3 races earlier.
9 of the 14 earlier close-outs would have been since 1990.
In 1996 and 2004 the championship would have been decided 3 races earlier than it was under the points scheme that existed at the time.
There are only 4 years when the new scheme would have denied us a final-race decider.
The earliest a championship would have been decided would have been race 11 of 18, in 2004.

I apologise in advance for any errors. It can get a bit tricky to figure out when a championship was wrapped up in years when scores were dropped. N.B. I have assumed that if drivers are tied on wins, then points will decide the championship - that's my understanding of what Max is doing but it gives me slightly different results to some media sources (specifically, for 1981).
