    Standard tire shop procedure for a tire--We used starter ether fluid.

    Yupp, seen this done many times. First time i seen it was with a tractor tire and a lighter, you need balls to do that. Big bang!!!

    An explosion is nothing more than a rapid expansion of material, in this case gas/fumes/vapor etc. The vaopr cuases enough high pressure to fill and inflate the space contained by the tire. That's my non engineering take on it.

    I would guess the hissing is the valve stem inards which they removed so it wouldn't shoot out and either be lost or shoot an eye out.

    Our commercial facilities use straight ether, which is the main source in many starter fluids. It is very safe in a controlled set-up, such inflating in a cage and using the correct tools.
