10 minutes into a drive today the 5/8 check engine came on perminately (static). When I got home I checked the ECU error codes. First one I got was 4 short flash's followed by endless short flash's. Then after holding the button for 3 seconds got the same code time after time. Then I went to erase the memory by holding down the button for 12 seconds. After that I got a 1111 code (Hot wire air flow meter). Then pressed button for 3 seconds and got the 4 flash's followed again by endless short flash's. Tried to erase the memory again but got the 4 followed by endless short flash's over and over.

This has never happened to me before. I'm going to disconnect then re-connect the battery and pull the codes again after letting it idle for 10 minutes. Any suggestions?

When one of my ECU's started giving me goofy results it turned out to be a chip going bad. I would try the following:

    1. Disconnect battery, remove ECU's and clean the pins to the Motronic connectors with electrical contact cleaner and a wire brush. Inspect the wiring looms to make sure the wires running through the firewall have not become worn and possibly shorting out against metal. Reinstall, reinitialize and pull your codes again.

    2. If the problem persists, disconnect the battery, remove the ECU's and swap the chips from one ECU to the other. Reinstall, reinitialize and pull codes again. If the problem moves to the other bank, you may have a chip going bad. If the problem stays on the same bank, you may have an issue with the quality of the connection pins to your sensors.

    3. If it looks like a chip problem, PM me as I have an eprom programmer and I can burn you a new set of chips. If it turns out to be the connector pins going to the sensors, Dave Helms has a kit in the works that addresses that issue (very well I might add).

Have a very good check of the negative connections from the frame to the gearbox/engine block, and for the battery.

    Thank you Eric & Ernie.

Just got back home and I'll take a look at your suggestions. Will report back as soon as I find something.

Well I had the battery disconnected over the weekend and after re-connecting it and starting ther car, no more CEL. Don't know what to think. Haven't pulled the codes yet, but will tomorrow.
