Ferrari undercoating - Dinol - is it available anywhere? Rifledriver?

    Hi all,

    Did a search, found a lot of good info from Rifledriver and others.

    Man, that undercoating job they did on the late 80s Ferraris is really nasty. The stuff is everywhere, kind of random, and pretty ugly.

    Anyways, a couple of questions about it:

    1. My car ('88 Mondial) is very low mile and all original. Because the Dinol undercoating is original, the way the car would have been delivered to the customer, I'm not inclined to remove it. Fortunately, I have almost none on the engine, but the frame and suspension is fairly thickly coated. Seems like, for better or worse, it's part of this particular car's history, so it will stay. I suppose it does also offer some corrosion protection, but that isn't much of a worry given the use of this car. I'm not a concours guy, but am curious: What do they do about the undercoating on Dinol covered Ferraris for concours cars? It's an ugly mess, but I'd imagine that judges would not deduct for it, since is an "as delivered" mess. (Again, just curious).

    2. Is Dinol available to consumers for touch up? I read Rifledriver's post about it being a 2 part process, and techs being "certified" to install it in the 80s. I've searched teh internets to try to buy it, but could not find anything.

    3. What color was it originally? Now it is a dark brown, it seems like that's what color it would have been when first applied (I have areas of it that get no exposure to the elements, and it looks dark brownish).

    4. If it is not available, is there a decent substitute? I've done a search and found some using Waxoyl, others use the various Wurth Stonegard products, or some others. But those don't seem right. Waxoyl appears to be a clear wax, while Dinol seems nowhere near clear. The Wurth products don't seem like an undercoating wax, but more like a traditional black rubberized or other non-wax style undercoating.

    Thoughts appreciated!

    Used to be available through the parts division but it was really terribly expensive even by Ferrari standards. It came in large cans, about 2 liters each. They had a division in the Detroit area. Try Dinol and Dinotrol. Do not know if company had any other name.

    I was not able to Dinol/Dinotrol, but did find Waxoyl. It is a black petroleum wax based product and came in a 500 ml spray can. It worked great and completely matched the OE undercoating. I bought mine from a place called Rovers North.

    Dinol is the industry standard for airplanes. I am familiar with AV-8 and AV-30. AV-30 is .030 of an inch thick when dry if applied correctly. It is best applied with a spray gun in light coats. It is nasty to work with and runs easily. Dinol as of a few years ago used to come in spray cans as well. It is light to dark brown depending on how many coats u apply. It is outstanding for corrosion protection. Boeing, Douglas and Airbus all used on thier planes out of the factory. Overspray is an issue. You can also apply it with a brush. Be careful not to put it on too thick. light coats. Otherwise it will look like ****!


    That being said, I would not spray it anywhere on my Ferrari that could be seen. inner door panels would be a good idea and places that u cant see it would be good to form a hard coat barrier protection against corrosion. It took me a long time to get rid of the undercoating on my suspension. nasty nasty nasty!

    if u plan on driving on salted roads and rain than go for it. You can beat it for corrosion protection.

    Paul or Brian,

    Is the stuff that Ferrari used listed on the webpage above? What about the stuff you mentioned Paul, AV-30? I don't see that on the website.

    I would like to touch up some areas under the wheel wells and I would like to use something at least close to the original stuff that Ferrari used. Even though I agree, the stuff is kind of nasty.

    It also went under the name TuffCoat

    Penetrant carried PN 900005204
    Sealant carried PN 900005205

    Those are Ferrari part numbers. I bet there is some still on old dealers shelves.

    Reading the Dinol website the penetrant #3650 sound very close. The sealant which is what you see sounds like either 460 30 ML 12-P. or possibly 77B5L1P.

    It is a good bet the product has evolved over time and neither is a perfect match.

    There was a service bulletin generated that I have not yet located that gave outside vendor information for the product. That one should have the Dinol part numbers.
