F1.com lists them in an "accident" and also classifies them with positions. Am I missing something?

Nope - Always been that way - The last runner was MW at "+1 lap".

Then the "Time/retired" column shows 'em both as stopped due to "accident" - But, SV kept going longer (!) and is therefore classified above RK. KR is classified in 16 as he went out "last" as it were.

    Cheers,

But a car that doesn't cross the finish line shouldn't be classified because it didn't finish. Under F1 rules are these cars deemed "finishers"?

Nope - The last "finisher" was MW 1 lap behind. But, if you run for longer than the other retirees you get classified above them - Rightly so IMHO.

I'd have to search, but I bet there have been races in which, say, only 5 cars finished (the old days) - Who would get the last point? - In F1, the last guy to drop out.

How did Kimi finish from the garage then? I don't get it either. He's in the garage drinking vodka and he "finished" the race?

Exactly. The last 3 drivers care classified as "wrecked" or "damaged" and didn't cross the finish line.

I think it's because there wasn't enough laps left for the leaders to lap them so they were counted in the race. They would have finished just ashead of Kimi i think because he retired before them.

Is that right Ian? Anyway what ever it is, i know it's always been like that.

If you complete 90% of the laps, no matter what occurs, you will be classified in the finishing order. So if you crash out on lap 56 of a 60 lap race, that is over 90% and you will be classified a finisher 4 laps down.

If you're in the pits, you get lapped in seconds.

OK, I don't mean to be picky but the last few drivers didn't have the "+4 laps" listing beside their names they were deemed "out of the race", is that fitting? Is that usual?

Yes & Yes. The last *finisher* (who crossed the line at the end) was MW one lap behind.

I wasn't aware of a "hard" 90% of the laps rule before you were classified with a position - But, in any event SV was listed as 14th, with 56 laps, and RK and Kimi 15th and 16th respectively with 55 laps. Beyond that (less than 90% completed is certainly possible) it's too much of a crap shoot to classify them at all.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I think Brawn this year will win more races. Ferrari seems to be struggling this year with all the new changes and regulations. Ferrari scored no points for either driver. Hamilton will do well but I do not think he will win the Championship. Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello will help Brawn to win the Championship. Its going to be a tough season for many teams. Some teams are happy with the new regulations and other teams will need to play catch- up. There are still many races left ; Lets see if Ferrari can prove me wrong. Barrichello is still a strong driver once drove for Team Ferrari with Eddie. Schumacher and Barrichello were also once Ferrari team mates. Remember the time Schumacher had to let his team mate pass him? Schumacher was embarrassed to accept victory after Ferrari orders dominant Brazilian team-mate to let him pass. in 2002.

boy those were the Golden Days. of Formula 1. Lets just see what developes this season of Formula 1.
Whether more changes to come during the race season.

Dunno where the above came from.....

Anyway, in poking around the formula1 site earlier I came across the definitive answer to the OP:

It goes on about what happens if the race is shortened, but I reckon we have our answer!

Didn't MS get a point a few years ago even though he had wrecked late. I seem to remember it being Montreal. I think someone got DQed and he moved up from being classified 9th to 8th, even though he didn't finish.

Just did some research. It was 2006 Hungarian GP. Rainy race, was Button's first win. Schumacher on the wrong tires on a drying track slipped back though the field before bumping wheels with Heidfield knocking him out of the race. Kubica finished 7th in his debut but was found to be underweight after the race. Schumacher who didn't finish but was classified 9th moved up to 8th to score a point.

Only need to go back to Australia last year.
Kimi got a point without finishing the race.
