I don't know what in the world you have cooking, Russ, but you scare me a bit. I'm worried that you have found a photo of me with one of the girls that I always wanted to meet but never did. Or maybe it is with one that I did meet.UGH! Please, I'm not one who is worth looking at or drinking to although I would love to be with you guys and to have some libation with REAL PILOTS. Have a ball down there !! It looks beautiful and far different than it was 65 years ago but unbelievably Hondo is the same except that all the barracks are gone. I can still see where my old barrack was from the Google Earth shot.
    Have a blast !!

Switcho, it has always been customary in my 20+ years in the AF and civilian Aviation community to routinely toast the senior guy and pay our respects. In AvChat, we have you.

So in the grand old pilot tradition that many of us have lived for years, we'll order a round of the finest Irish Whiskey, raise our glasses in your honor and then send you the bill.

    :)

I accept all of the above but only because I might be a bit older than most and I like Irish Whiskey mostly in a coffee on a frigid day. But since it won't be frigid down there...have one anyway. There is nothing better than a group of flyers getting together to tell a bunch of lies and laugh at each other. I have had many in years past; putting a tarp over the lower wing if you didn't have a tent, tipping a few, and visiting with the best. And then I have been to absolutely great gatherings on the fancy side inside with the Thunderbirds and Blue ..what's their name ? and many great guys and gals. Have a great time down there. My best wishes to all.

My son was up sick all night last night. We got him to the doctor this morning-- some kind of a virus. I don't feel right leaving him with the nanny.

I regret we will miss out this time. Y'all have fun!

Great weekend, summarized by flying down Friday, German food/beer, Officers Club, sleep, Airport Diner breakfast, Mark and I flew to Kerrville and down the Guadalupe River before lunch, downtown food/beer, Officers Club, fine dining at Cotton Gin, Officers Club, F1 Race, sleep, flight in Russ T-28, and quick 1:15 flight back with the wind.

Already plans for a 2nd annual March or April next year. A fly and drive.

You can see all my pics http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/album.php?albumid=263.

A wonderful time with terrific folks! High class folks without exception.

I will also give Tillman an "A" on his handling of the T-28 -- you're a natural: time to finish the ticket!

And our fearless AVChat member, Switches, was honored in absentia, as is always the tradition to honor the senior aviator.

First time I have seen a Garmin G-1000 glass mfi panel as was on Rob's turbo Skylane - Holy Cow!

Hope to see even more folks next year for the second annual Fly-in/Drive-in!

I really enjoyed the shots of those T-28's in action, especially the one in camo and with the spinner. One cannot mistake that as a North American design, the P-51 lineage shows. Russ, for my own amazement, what are the figures or parameters ( MP, RPM,)for operating the R-1820 on your airplane and what kind of speeds for approach, etc.?
Absolutely a great looking airplane and I like the Cal. 50 pods.

I actually have a T-28A, with the smaller seven cylinder Wright R-1300 800 hp engine as compared to the B/C/D with the R-1820 1400hp engine. So, my little plane is about 20 kts slower at cruise, but burns about 15 gal/hr less fuel. The A model cruises at about 180 kts at 36 - 40 mpg, while the 1820 versions are up about 200 kts or so at 50+ gal/hr. They both come around the pattern at about the same speeds with final at 100 kts.

For my little engine plane here are some engine settings:
TO: 44 inches at 2500 rpm
    Climbout: 38 inches at 2400 rpm - about 1600 ft/min at 120 kts
180 kt cruise (clean); 28 inches at 2100 rpm

For what I wanted to do, the small engined plane seemed perfect with much less operating cost.

Here are a couple of pireps on both 1300 and 1820 engined T-28s:
