Is it just me or does everyone else make a mess checking the oil on these cars. I usually drop a few drops on the cams and a few on the air cleaner box. Perhaps there is a trick or 2 that I dont know of?

I usually pull the stick half way then grab it from half way of the stick for better control, but first place a rag just next to the dipstick tube to catch the drip, and as soon as the dipstick is out, rest just the TIP of the stick on the rag and slowly take the rag and the stick away from the engine bay.

I use an old bath towel placed over cams and airbox. And it works well.

Not so much checking oil as topping up -always seem to get a few drops on the raw steel bits of the exhaust which of course then smokes like hell when you start up; very embarrasing for the first couple of minutes while it burns off.

I've had good luck pulling the stick up between engine cover and back glass with a folded paper towel handy to control the tip when it exits the tube.

Personally, I wish one or two drops of oil off the end of the dipstick were the only oil drops I have to contend with on my 32 year-old engine!!
