Close but no bannana. Whiting isn't going to tell them how to make their diffuser legal. They bring it, he looks at it and goes "Hmmmm......." and then says yes or no. He isn’t going to say “Well you know Newey, if you moved your opening up just 3mm then it’d be legal.” It seems to me Newey (as brilliant as he is) is double pissed that his didn't find the loop-hole. Well, he could find it just not exploit it. But, if he had you'd better be sure the RB would have one on it as well! :) Then he'd be sitting there with the other three saying it was perfectly legal. Which theirs are. ;)

The race is now between Brawn, Toyota and Williams. It is not over in a longshot.

Just from a purely Ferrari perspective it will not be very satisfying. Fine by me.

The Scuderia said it will cost them 6 races to catch up. That is basically the halfway point of the season. They should just write this one off and start working on the 2010 car.

The consequence may have been unintended but if not for this would any team been able to catch up with McLaren, Ferrari or even Renault?
It took BMW and Toyota years and tons of money to make it to just the second tier. Honda gave up the chase entirely. Red Bull, Williams etc never really stood a chance of becoming a consistent winning team.
Like it or not the deck has been reshuffled and there's new life at the table.
This season may, or may not, be lost for Ferrari but if you think a bit farther out and consider the health of the sport it may well be the best thing that could have happened.

SF and McLaren will never catch up BGP this season. That's not going to happen simply coz they are months behind in car development - and BGP will also keep development at decent pace. Somewhere in July-August BGP can easily, if first half of the season goes without reliability issues, gradually slow down 2009 project in favour of one for 2010. Somewhere around that time, SF and McLaren will do a similar thing - after they develop 2009 car enough to minimise the damage.

Formula one stopped being sporting a long time ago. Circa 1960. Today it is big business and hugely commercial.

Helmut Marko says Red Bull was angered by the decision to approve the three double-decker diffusers because it had already submitted a similar design for approval and had it rejected.

"What angers us is the fact that we had approached [Charlie] Whiting for a clarification on a diffuser solution like the one in question and we were told it was illegal, therefore we did not pursue it any further though our design team had similar ideas," said Marko.

Right on. Let's see if those engineers are as good as they think they are. If so, let's make it competitive again.

The gauntlet has been thrown down in front of them. It's their move.

Maybe they can hire some of the engineers that Brawn had to lay off...

    LOL

Seriously, it was rumored that he was let go of his last F1 designer job because he spent more days on his yacht than in his office.

PS: With all the stuff that's going on, I so totally wish "Business F1" would still exist and give us the inside track. There are so many personnel topics to cover...

Signs of sanity in F1 are dealt with ruthlessly;)
While I've always been fascinated by the "nuts and bolts" stories I do miss the time when they were a bout actual nuts and bolts!
