Yah, right. And female singers like Kate Smith and Rosemary Clooney (who were big in their period) would have a chance today. Some idiot would tell them they're not photogenic enough and throw them out of the office. Come on... be honest. Talent is based on looks now, not what they bring new to medium.

Appears? I have known a few people that can sing quite well just from their own talent and nonprofessional coaching in places like school and church.. I hear flaws in her style and control that lead me to believe she is one of these people. I'm sure she has picked up a few things from emulating others as well..

One thing I haven't heard anyone mention about her performance, the astounding COURAGE she showed in front of that big audience.

She had some strong core beliefs to do this thing.

Because true talent would make the wannabes feel bad about being talentless and unskilled.

Honestly: isn't the appeal of this kind of story the notion that any frog can turn into a prince? The belief that any bedraggled soot smudged cinderella can become the princess of the land? Do any of the fairy tales mention talent, study, or hard work?

The appeal is that some day some fairy godagent might pick you to be the next famous big shot: you might be the next F1 driver or american idol --- that it could happen to you ..... without your having to work for it.

The back story on this singer is one of a previous ambition, put aside for years. But that's not the story being told. It's the sudden rags-to-success story that grabs headlines. Was there professional training in the past? Nobody's saying. That would "spoil" the "magic".

We live in a time enamored of "sudden" success, but biased against success that doesn't fall out of the sky like a lotto ticket.

This kind of reminds me of the Paul Potts phenomenon back in 2007 (search you tube for more information). With that said I think Ms. Boyle will win this season. Even if she doesn't there has to be someone out there that will sign her.

I believe Simon Cowell has already signed her to a record deal.

I dont think she has a chance of winning though. The demographic of the audience is going to go with someone more attractive and pop music oriented.

But truthfully she doesnt need to win. She has the worlds attention and great things will happen for her regardless.

True dat. Not that I'm a huge fan but, I believe at one point Kid Rock was sleeping in a dumpster while paying his dues. And I thing Poison essentially live out of their van when they were getting started as well.

anunakki, I think it was the same with the whole Potts thing where some thought that the demographic would not pick him. After all he was over weight, had bad teeth and had a face that only mother would love. Now with that said I could see her being removed from Brittan's got Talent for political reasons such as her already massive following stealing the other contestants thunder.

Either way she needs to be signed.

haha, I was wondering where you guys were disagreeing.

I bet you 95% of her "fans" today would have been laughing at her as well if they had seen her live. Now that everybody knows what a great singer is in hindsight, they can say "she's amazing, the music industry is unfair blah blah blah" but.. yeah right, I bet you would have been mocking her too. And supposedly now she is in talks with Sony. Well I bet you if Sony had heard her before this, even though she is amazingly talented, they would have shown her the door.. only now because of this video phenomenon, are they signing her and taking advantage of her already massive popularity

So is Simon in all of this (the Brit show and AI) for the income for producing the show or for having the ability to be the first to jump on some nobody like Boyle?

Or a huge sense of humor.

Try skipping the intro, and just listen to the singing voice, without the synthesized "surprise" factor.

"Amazing talent"? Well, compared to today's poster "pop stars", maybe.
But listen to opera or singers you can download off the Internet, and you'll hear flaws in this vocal performance.

Not bad, for an amateur. But not an optimal performance either. Just a lot more than you were led to expect from the intro.

Obviously neither this woman nor Mama Cass would get a contract today based on talent without looks. (The US record industry isn't selling music; it's selling album covers. A home computer has more capability than any studio that Elvis ever used. Music you can get off the internet for a dollar an album. The record industry is past its "use by" date. The CD industry today is selling porn lite.)

The voice is good. It could use training. As mentioned, a contract at this point would be a novelty contract -- riding the existing publicity.

She definitely has a sense of humor. I think she had to have one to get through what she has.

I could hear things in her performance that showed that she could sing well but not polished as one with professional training.
    I like her voice regardless.

As far as contracts go, Simon admitted that he knew he was going to hear something special from her and I'm guessing just played along with the premise.

Some back story said that she sang in church and karaoke mostly.
Many people do but don't come close to the quality delivery she has.
Case in point is her rendition of "Cry Me a River". She sang it better than "Dream" on stage. http://cajunboyinthecity.blogspot.com/2009/04/cry-me-river-by-susan-boyle.html

    She appears unassuming with humility.
I hope she can make a CD and not get ripped off doing it so she can live somewhat comfortably on a little royalty from here on.
I also hope she gets a chance to sing before the Queen as well.
