The company that set their sights on dominating the racetracks of the world produced the 355, 550/575, 360/430, & 599, the superlative road cars of their periods.

The company that produces the California 2+ set their sights on dominating Rodeo Drive and Lily Pond Lane.

...With predictable effect on the racetracks.

Great observation. It was the same back in the 80s, the reason why they sucked so much back then could clearly be seen by their roadcar portfolio, only cars for pu**ies! Like the 288 and the F40...wait... never mind.

Maybe they should provide the F60 with a foldable hardtop so that when it rains the KERS won't get wet.

Right. The 2+2 is the problem. That's why Ferrari hasn't won a championship since the 212 Inter was introduced.

    Oh, wait....

While the foldable top might be quite interesting, it's actually the "2+2" part where it gets creepy...

    LOL

They already have: It is that tall thing at the end of the car. It is stuck in the up position.

While I agree that the California has design issues, wasn't it during the dominating Schumacher years that the beached whale, aka 612 (in my book a hot competitor for ugliest Ferrari ever, including all Drogo aberrations) was introduced? So much for opus' theory. :)

Good lord! I was thinking the same thing! For the love of god, how much of the Cali hate are you trying to spread Opus? geezus krist! We get it, you hate the Cali, you hate the 599.., you've posted about a hundred thousand times giving your opinion how much you hate the design of said cars... are you going to mess with every thread until the whole world sees it your way? you're like a ten year old, poking at everyone until they pay attention to him... geezus... go off and get yourself a new life... either that or just take your Cali hate, go stand in a corner, and then light yourself on fire! thank you!

Easy there, that's a bit much hate directed at a fellow FChatter.

I find the question actually interesting: Is there a relationship between Ferrari building posh crap cars and slow F1 cars?

It was said that the 348 was the lowpoint of recent Ferrari history and it coincided with some of their worst seasons ever in the early nineties.

Now we have the not so great California and a lousy season. Coincidence?

Fact is, that when Jean Todt was running F1 and the car production, both were on top of the world.

OTOH (as I pointed out) there is the 612 falling into the great Schumacher years. And I can't think of an uglier Ferrari than the ungainly 612. Makes the Cali look modern and edgy. :)

The 80's slide in F1 came at the exact same time it was making those other "dogs", the 308, 328, TR, F40, and 288 GTO. Case closed.

Hmm, you could actually make a case that those dogs really were dogs. Except for the F40 none of them have any racing history worth a dime.

And before those owners release their flame throwers: I have a 308 myself. Love it, but it is a dog.

Agreed about the racing history but that's not the point that's being made. Opus wants us to think that there is a connection today between the California and F1 failure. Yet, during the team's biggest losing streak lasting over a decade, Ferrari made what would be called today some of it's best loved vehicles to most owners. Isn't owner love and admiration the most important thing?

There is no connection. End of story.

wuauuuu ... i am still laughing 5 minutes later !!! thank you !!
At the end of the day .. there is no such thing as an ugly ferrari ... is just that some are nicer that others .. they are cmnsidered works of art .
Go to the MoMa museum in NYC is the only car that has its own area ... and not so long ago they had one hanging from the wall at the entrance ... so.
ugly women ... maybe ... ugly ferrari ...... nop..... !!!

The 308 was quite succesful in European rallies.

And as the great Spanish rally driver Antonio Zanini once said to his co-driver in the heat of a battle: "the chassis of this car is f*ckin´ good". So no dog.

Actually there is and Luca de Montezemolo said so himself: When he took over Ferrari it was at the bottom in its car production (348) and F1. LdM started the turnaround in both areas and brought both up to top conditions with Jean Todt at the helm.

Now Todt is gone and the race team is falling apart. Car production is still going strong, but they did create the Cali 2+.

While I wouldn't directly attribute the Cali for the failures of the F1 team, there is an overall theme going on that is not healthy.

You are grasping there. The few cars Michellotto beefed up didn't really put the time sheets on fire. Octane recently had an interesting article and as a 308 owner I'm not bragging about its racing history based on that.
