To start: anyone know what is the yellow, cilindrical apparatus marked by the white arrow?

Contrary to Porsche, Ferrari put in far less efforts and commitment into prototype racing. Porsche having no other commitments than prototype racing started to work on the 917 six months earlier than Ferrari on the 512, There were the factory cars, tuned by SpA SEFAC and there were the private cars of Scuderia Filipinetti, N.A.R.T., Écurie Francorchamps, Scuderia Picchio Rosso, Gelo Racing Team and Escuderia Montjuich. Basically, those private cars didnt receive any factory support at all. They were considered as field fillers, never as candidate winners. The handicap for Ferrari was that - contrary to Porsche - it was involved the whole season in F1 racing as usual, so that the 512S factory cars received far from all technical help. At Porsche, however, JWA Gulf, KG Salzburg and Martini Racing, received all direct factory support. All those cars were real work's cars. And even the privateers as AAW Shell Racing and David Piper Racing received almost the same support. JWA Gulf, KG Salzburg and Martini Racing could always count on stable pairings as Siffert, Redman, Elford and Rodriguez for the whole season. By Ferrari it was the opposite as their race director Mauro Forghieri had to change his pairings over and over as all his topdrivers as Ickx, Andretti, Surtees, Peterson, Regazzoni were all involved in F1 and could just occasionally take a seat in a 512. Nevertheless at the end of 1970 Ferrari managed to clearly close the development gap with the 512 in M-spec. winning the Kyalami 1000km where the 917:s were lapped and outpaced by quite a huge margin braking the lap record over and over again. The same thing happened at Österreichring before an alternatorproblem put an end of an even more devastating victory. Unfortunately for the 1971 season all of the 512M was handed over to private teams with no support at all as Ferrari focused on the 312PB for the 1972 season to win all races except one where it didnt participate. I understand that Porsche said that they didnt have anything to enter for that season.

Well atleast the T33/3's picked up some of the pieces after the 312PB's broke or had an accident in 1971. To bad Penske didnt have 2 512M,s in 1971!

Serial #1010, car #19 (Andretti/Merzario) led for a long while before the gearbox failed. Serial #1026, car #21 (Guinti/Vacarella and later Andretti) eventually won after Andretti came from the failed #19 car and put in a tremendous drive, needing a spash of fuel in the final two laps to make it to the end over the Porsche.

That actually is really cool. Not sure what it has got to do with 1026 though.
