While it's fun to see new names at the top of the charts, I can't help but feel like I'm waiting for the "real" season to start. Anyway, here are some questions about the season so far:

    1. How long will Renault continue to kid themselves with Piquet?
    2. What does this all mean? By this I refer to the age-old debate of talent vs. machinery. Are certain drivers being validated, others exposed? Or is the shift in machinery that significant and the general talent level that equal where a technical advantage can turn the classifications on their ear?
    3. Suppose Button wins the title, what will the perceptions of his title be 10, 15, 25 years from now? I see him being looked at as a decent driver, though perceived as a "Yeah, but..." title winner.
    4. Whose money did Brawn use to purchase Honda? Three races in, I was thinking how ugly their cars look--like an under-funded privateer in F3000--and devoid of sponsorship he must have pulled a hell of a deal to take over.
    5. How do you look seriously at a season like this when there are THREE drivers named Sebastian on the grid!?!?

    Thoughts?

They are not that stupid. There's somehow money involved. Even so, he won't be in F1 next year.

Underscores the importance of a good car. And Brawn's personal contributions Schumi's unprecedented success. But more than anything it means a revitalized and --finally-- a truly interesting F1 season.

Only total losers put an asterisk (*) on someone's championship. Whoever wins, deserves it. The season is plenty long to equalize for "bad luck".

    Honda's.

    Two words. Sebastian Loeb. :)

    1) Piquet (and Alonso) will be out after this year is over. Piquet may not see out the season, if he keeps driving so badly. As soon as Alonso is gone (likely to Ferrari), then Flavio will be right on the phone firing Nelson The Slug.

    2) No difference, it's always been about having a good driver and a good car. I've said all along Lewis is good, and Button is good. Button finally has a good car and is doing fantastically. Lewis has a crap car and is doing great compared to his teammate. We can still see the wheat and the chaff. We still know Alonso is better than Piquet. Kubica is better than Heidfeld. Kimi is better than Massa. Vettel is better than Webber. Hamilton is better than Kovalainen. Button is better than Barrichello. Lets take Brawn as an example. Barrichello was like this at Ferrari... Schumi was winning every race, and sometimes Rubens did well, sometimes he sucked. No difference.

    3) He will be considered a worthy champion. Here is the list of every WDC winner since the whole thing began

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Formula_One_World_Drivers'_Champions

If you look at the list, it's a "who'se who" of great Formula 1 drivers. There isn't a single driver on that list who is a nobody who lucked into a win. They were all good drivers. The closest to lucky would have to be Jacques Villeneuve who won in a car 10x better than any other car. But he was still considered to be a great driver. Button will be no different.

    4) Hondas money. They let him have the team for free.

    5) Easy. Two out of the 3 Sebastian's don't count.

I don't think Jacques was ever really considered to be a "great" driver. Good, certainly, but one who was seen as benefitting from driving a vastly superior car. Hell, he even lost the championship to Schumacher in a far less worthy F310b.

I think Button will be seen similarly. Look at Flav's comments on him last week, equating him to a 'sign at the side of the road'. I don't know if it's fair to say that though...after all, Jensen has spent most of his career in sub-standard equipment and he most deservedly is driving the best car on the grid this season.

He is probably more Mika Hakkinen than Villenueve, imo. (i.e. paid his dues, drove bad cars, eventually drove the best car on the grid to a championship...or two!)

Keke Rosberg in his entire career had 5 wins and 5 poles...although people call Jacques lucky I think that prize goes to Keke.....

    Honda looking like fools now......

Buemi did well today and i'd take him right now over Heikki and Nelson....Bourdais is wasting gas...

Anyone else think Vettel sounds a lot like Schumacher when he talks? His inflections are very similar.

It is amazing to hear Vettel talk. He is always thanking his team, saying how much fun he is having, or apologizing profusely for an error.

That's exactly what I was thinking when he was in the interviews, and it was even better today playing the German national anthem after the win, would have been better with the Italian right after tho...

One would expect something like that from two Germans.

As a Barrichello fan it cracks me up that already people are writing in this thread like Button may have won the championship. For various reasons (including the torrential rains) Button has won two races and has one third. In the meantime, his teammate has yet to win and did not podium last week, yet is still but a scant 6 points adrift. Why does RB NEVER get any love?

If you wonder what the press will be like if Button wins, God forbid my driver RB wins it!!! The sky will fall with the British based F1 press. I am already lauging because Ross Brawn who everyone thinks is brilliant (and so far this has shown to be true) is the one WHO WANTED Rubens ON THE TEAM AND HE MADE THAT DECISION. Do you think RB is there because Ross couldn't find a faster, younger driver?

    Hmmm.

Brawn knows from experience that RB can do reasonably well playing the second fiddle. I think most of us know that.

And trying to hire Button again. He wanted to hire him this year, yet now he's talking trash about him?

I think there might be some clause in the "sale" of Honda Racing to Brawn for Honda to be able to buy it back or somehow return to the team.

Perhaps "most" of you THINK that, but are you implying Ross thought from the start that Jenson would outperform him? If that is the case what happens if Jenson DNF's next week and RB takes the lead? How will Jenson handle playing second fiddle as he did last year to RB?

Rubens is getting over the hill, and his speed is too inconsistent. I can't comment on what Ross thinks, but he's been vocal on several occasions about his high regard of Button's ability. Personally, I think Jenson is consistently quicker than Rubens, and generally makes less mistakes. I think Rubens will get a win or two this year, but it will be Button who leads Brawn GP. Rubens is a perennial number 2 driver.

I may eat some humble pie before this one is done, but I would like to revisit this with you at season's end. If I am wrong I will humbly and seriously say you were correct, but if I am right you owe me a reese's peanut butter cup (I love those things). :p

I suspect Ross thought that RB would be reliable, experienced and accept whatever came his way. And above all, be willing to drive for next to nothing. A bargain journeyman racer, if you will.

I can buy that perspective, but then what do you think he feels about him possibly leading the championship after another race or two? Pretty good deal for a journeyman racer, huh?

Key word is possibly...I just don't think it'll happen. I have a theory regarding drivers groomed as #2's...like RB and Massa, for example.

Talk about "can't please all the people all the time!" :D

We used to complain about 'em being "nothing more than rolling billboards". Now we've got one "naked" and we "complain" about that :)

    :D

Was it "Days of Thunder" with the gay F1 jockey? - And it seems none of 'em are known as "Seb"

    Cheers,
