Thought I was dragging a shopping trolley under the nearside wheel arch. Pulled over to see that my Battery Cradle had totally rusted and given up...Battery scraping on the road. Condisering that this is the first major issue in nearly a year of ownership (I drive it every day too), I'm not to worried...Just got a couple of questions...

The first one is a bit of a laymens question, sorry, but I've never need the info before...

What is the diameter of the wheel nuts???

Secondly, is the Battery Cradle an 'official part', that I can order...Or should I get the guy who runs my local Ferrari-shop to muster something up??? He's quoted me 75 pounds ($115 dollars???) to create a new tray (or substitute) with welding, which I thought was good considering he's a bonified ex-Ferrari man.

    I'll take door #2 please.

I'm sure he will make something that will stand up better than the factory part.

G'day Mark! Sorry to hear about that!! :):)

The Ferrari wheel bolts require a 22mm or 7/8 socket. ;);)

I dont know how much a genuine replacement one is worth. Maybe Daniel sells them at Ricambi? :):)

But getting one made is a good option and $115 sounds very reasonable. :):)

Here is a pic of what it shoud look like. :D:D

    Hey,

I cut my battery tray out of my 91 348 rear battery style as part of my 348 lightening program. You can have the tray free if you want just pay the shipping from the colonies. If interested I'll post a picture.

After looking at 'what's left' of my battery cradle, I think the only option is to have a replacement prefabricated...I think bolts will work better than welding...Thanks all the same FBB, but it looks like mine's different, it was welded on two sides, to the inner chassis panel...I certainly dont have the reinforcement strut underneath, that's for sure LOL !!!

    Beware, rust never sleeps :D

I agree, option #2. If it was a 250 GTO, then you might want the 'correct' tray there. But it's not, so you don't...

This is a good reminder for anyone changing out their battery, take the time to clean the tray and repaint while you're in there.

After lots of VERY, VERY careful measuring, I've prepared my schematic for the Steel Prefab-Company. I will be adding some F348 decals later.....Kidding!

    Dumb question here.
From the photo it would seem the battery tray is exposed to the elements from below. Is this the case? Currious as I have a 355 and asumed the bottom was sealed, what with the carbon fiber panels under the car, etc.

If the battery area is sealed, the only corrosion would be from the battery itself - right??

    Hi Mate,

The words '348' and 'carbon fibre' don't really belong in the same sentence haha, yes!!! The battery cradle is exposed from underneath, but a large degree of rot does come from the battery itself it would seem...Not just one battery obviously, but I guess over 14 years?????

UConn Husky has a good point. Look after this area. I asked the pre-fab guy to treat the steel...He' going to galvanise it for an extra 10 quid, so it should hopefully last at least as well as the official part...I'm a b'b'b'bit worried about using the 'bolt-on' option due to the issues with gravity, but hey! There aren't many options on the table.

Just have a look under your 355, because I haven't a clue mate? As far as carbon fibre 'under-panels' go, well...Aren't you the lucky one ;-)

Looks nice! If you're going with a bolt on option and not welding, I would have this piece powder coated instead of the zinc. The zinc is very reactive and will oxidize fairly quickly...and once that's gone, the steel is susceptible. Also you might want to plan for some type of battery hold down to hold it in place.

    nice work ;)

That's a very good point, although I don't think holding it 'down' will be a problem, it must weigh half a tonne on it's own :), stopping it from sliding around may be an issue...I was thinking of that wonderful invention: Self adhesive rubber carpet underlay????

...Actually it's quite a heavy beast. How many holes do you reckon I can dril in it before it looses integrity?

Oh yes, certainly looks very nice!:eek:

Hahaha!! Man, you over cooked that one! :p:p

Looks to be very thick and I am sure it would survive a Nuclear Bomb, but it probably didnt need to be that thick. :p:p

Oh well, leave it be man. Whats around 1kg or 2kg in the back there eh?? ;);)

Thinking of drilling 30 holes in it like my old BMX seat!!!...Although that ended in tears. Know what you mean about it being 'nuclear-proof'...I do live near a primary target though, so I do need to consider blast-waves and gamma rays :)

If you drill holes in it now, you will ruin the coating and the moisture will get to the steel. You will have to either treat the holes you drill to 'seal' them or get it recoated.... or re-make it in stainless steel. Looks like it will do the job though.
