    1952 Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale

    Ferrari 212 Inter with chassis number 0197 EL is a right-hand drive vehicle in coupe configuration and bodied by Vignale. It is finished in a brilliant two-tone yellow with black fenders and stripe that extends the length of the vehicle just under the side windows.

    It was sold to its first owner in June of 1952. From then it passed to Luigi Chinetti, the major US importer of Ferrari automobiles. From then it passed through several owners, mostly from the North East part of the United States before returning to Europe in the mid-1970's and into the possession of a UK owner.

    Since new it has been fitted with a 250 GT engine from chassis number 1901GT.

    It has been campaigned in several historic events such as the Norwich Union RAC Classis run to Silverstone in 1988 and the Christies International Historic Festival at Silverstone in 1992. It is seen here at the 2007 Cavallino Classic where it was shown by its present owner, Robert Cole of California.

    In the best grand touring tradition, the 612 is built to cover long distances with great comfort, style and a high average velocity, with reasonable interior room and luggage capacity. In other words, it's the perfect mount to take with your spouse from Rome to Lake Como (or Los Angeles to Monterey) for a weekend getaway. And let's just say that compared with its immediate predecessor, the 456M GT, the 612 is a little grander.

    First, you should know how to pronounce it. Say skaall-yetti in the fluid and slightly lyrical way that seems to be an Italian birthright, and you'll get approving nods from the cognoscenti. Second, know that although this 199 -mph, 532-bhp Ferrari is styled by Pininfarina, it's a tribute to the man, Sergio Scaglietti, a maestro in the specialty of forming aluminum whose achievements include the legendary 250 GTO and pontoon-fendered Testa Rossa of 1958. And third, that it continues the long lineage of V-12 Ferrari 2+2s that began with the 166 Inter of 1948.

    Engine: Type 207, flat 12-cylinder in vee formation, DOHC, 1,490cc, Lucas Fuel injection, c.255 bhp at 12,000 rpm; Gearbox: Ferrari Type 12C, five-speed manual; Suspension: front, double wishbone, rear, single wishbone with trailing arms and telescopic coil spring dampers; Brakes: disc all round, with inboard rear. Monoposto.

    In an attempt to curb the ever-increasing speeds of Formula One, for 1961 the engine regulations were changed, as such allowing a maximum capacity of 1.5 litres. By the time the more generous three litre rules were established for 1966 the manufacturers had designed some wonderful and potent small capacity engines which were mated to incredibly nimble chassis, that said it is widely regarded that Ferrari's 1512 was technically without compare. It was the first flat 12 engine produced by Ferrari's talented young engineer, Mauro Forghieri and the only Ferrari to bear a four numbered identification name. While creating an incredibly exotic engine with 24 spark plugs, four distributors, four ignition coils, and high-pressure fuel injection, Forghieri designed the flat twelve in vee formation with the two banks lying at 180 degrees (rather than a Porsche-like Boxer configuration) producing a 12 cylinder engine so compact that the chassis to which it was mounted was less than an inch longer than the eight cylinder 158 it was meant to replace (the total wheelbase measured 94.5ins). The introduction of the 1512 meant that during the 1964 season Ferrari had used six, eight and twelve cylinder engined cars. Whilst power initially was not immense, the flat twelve had an incredibly low centre of gravity which made for significantly improved handling.

    Mondial 8

    The Mondial was introduced as the Mondial 8 in 1980. It was the first Ferrari to depart from the company's familiar 3-digit naming scheme and was fairly mild-performing (for a Ferrari). It used a mid/rear-mounted Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection V8, shared with the 308 GTBi/GTSi, mounted transversely. The engine was originally used in the 1973 Dino 308 GT4. The K-Jetronic system is mechanical with a high pressure pump which streams fuel continusly to the injectors & does not have a computer, just a few relays to handle the cold start sequence etc. The chassis was also based on the 308 GT4, but with a 100 mm (3.9 in) longer wheelbase at 2650 mm (104.3 in). The suspension was the classic layout of unequal-lengthdouble wishbones & Koni dampers all around.

    The Mondial 8 is considered one of the marque's most inexpensive to maintain (major service can be performed without removing the entire engine/transmission subframe), and even practical vehicles due to its 214 hp (160 kW), proven drivetrain, and four seats.
