So I'm driving around today and notice that a) the engine would sporadically go down on power (typically after going over some bumps), while at the same time the tach would drop to zero. After a couple of seconds the engine would start running again fine and the tach would stablize at the right rpm.

Felt to me like one bank was cutting out for a couple of seconds. Obviously, it's likely there's a loose or dirty connection somewhere as this seemed to happen when driving over bumps.

What is the tach driven off?

Does this sound like a failing digiplex?

The car is an '82 gtsi and it's bone stock in every regard. An engine out major was just performed w/in the last few months. I haven't pulled the caps/rotors yet. Hoping someone might have a suggestion or two before I go analyzing every single part in the ignition system.

    Thanks!

My first guess would be a bad reference sensor, or loose/broken wire going to it.

Do a search here and add the extra ground wire to the Digiplex, mine had the same issue and was solved by doing this. Good luck.

The tach signal is synthesized by one of your DigiPlex ECUs -- so, as the guys have suggested, you need to determine if the input signals (from the flywheel sensors, power, etc.) to the DigiPlex are bad, or if the DigiPlex itself is bad. Never hurts to ensure the ground connections are healthy (as Andy experienced) -- and when you do this, if you swap the DigiPlex units you might be able to deduce something:

    1. Problem goes away = all is good (and fixing the grounds, or just rooting around ;), did the trick).

    2. You still lose 1 bank, but now the tach works = not a good sign for one of your DigiPlex.

    3. You still lose 1 bank and the tach = most likely trouble with the input signals.

to add to what steve told you the connectors for the mag pickups are on the flywheel side of the engine (left as you look at it from the back) and are easy to find. there are 3 pickups: one for each digiplex and a third for the tach (via one of the digiplexes). they are easy to test with an ohmeter; good ones have some nominal small resistance. when they fail they're open circuit. from what i've read if a dedicated ground wire for the digiplexes doesn't fix the problem a bad pickup is probably the second most common fault. good luck. jon s

Thank you gents - that's very helpful. Much appreciated. I'll dig into it tomorrow starting with a ground for the digi's, check the wiring to the reference sensors, check the sensors themselves. If that doesn't provide a solution I'll switch the digi's and try to do a little more diagnosis.

    Thank you!

Thank you again fellas - problem solved. I:

    a) cleaned the connections/contacts for the timing sensors,
    b) cleaned the connections/contacts for the digiplexs,
    c) installed the separate grounds for the digiplexs, and
    d) cleaned a couple of ground connections in the vicinity.

Several of the contacts looked somewhat dusty and weathered. Some 600 wet/dry and a little WD40 where accessible certainly improved things, leaving a nice surface for good contact.

    Great day for a drive.....

Great job, I had the same feeling of relief when I fixed mine as well.
