Rubens lost in Spain because he was much slower than Button on the "Option" tyre - and because he 3 stopped (which calculations showed was the quickest strategy) he actually spent less tiime on those tyres as well. He simply got beaten - just as he did today when he shredded his (option) tyres much earlier than JB did in the first stint.

JB is very, very smooth & Rubens much more agressive & its clear which style is yielding the best results. Today, for a good period of the race, their pace was similar - until Rubens killed his tyres (again).

I think JB and RB are very equal as drivers. If you look at the times, they are very close. I would put it all down to RB being what, 8 or 9 years older? Think what you like, especially those of us over 30, but age takes its toll especially when measured by tenths of seconds.......

The times are almost identical, but it is less about age, and more about JB having a girlfriend and RB having a wife and two kids. I speak from experience.

Rubens is exactly what the team needs, someone who knows how to bring a car home in the points consistently. You do not win the manufacturers championship without one. A manufacturers championship would be quite a crown for Ross Brawn.

exactly my point Dodici ! Every F1 driver wants to be World Champion and I doubt Rubino went to Honda/Brawn to be known yet once again as the 2'nd driver!....

politics?? I, along with many other F1 fans, believed that Rubens would finally be World Champion if he had the car ..he HAS the car..he started from a clean slate..he yet once again acts and drives like a bloody 2'nd driver!..I/we expected more from him ..now once again..I'm not a Button hater and that's not the point here...Brawn is the best car in the field this year and we are getting cheated from seeing a Senna/Prost action packed racing as Button is schooling Barrichello PERIOD

Wow that is a rip on both and on Brawn . Look I am a huge Ferrari fan and no matter what they are my favorite team, however Brawn obviously knows what he is doing in F1. As far as Rubins he has won more races than you and I combined ;). Who's embarassing now? LOL.

Alex, please see the post above this one. rip Brawn? the man is a F1 god taking 2 (Benetton & Ferrari) teams in the dumps and winning World Championships with them !

BTW, how do you know I haven't won more karting races than Rubens :) & yes I am very embarassed in Rubens performance and that's why I started this thread and there are many other F1 fans that feel the same ! Besides why should I be embarrased??? I have accomplished all my life goals before 40 years of age ! too bad Rubens can't say the same !!!! LOL LOL LOL

Brawn isn't braindead. He knows that if barrichello and button are going to race each other they are going to collide and its not going to do the team any good at all.
He doesn't drive like a 2nd driver and he's at best a couple of tenth's behind button. We've seen for the last 2 races now that barrichello was consistently quicker on fresh tyres but he doesn't manage them well so button eventually has the edge. On top of that, Rubens already has had 2 penalties (2x 5 places) because of reliability.

My thoughts exactly. Unless Jenson sold his soul to the devil and has not one mechanical gripe or mechanical failure, a Rubens win or second place and this championship will look very, very different.

    Interesting question.

He won't win against Button (not enough skill and/or not a working strategy from the pit wall). So it would have to be a GP where Button is suffering a DNF. The cars seem to be bullet proof, so it would have to be some freak accident (backmarker running into Button), which could happen anywhere and nowhere.

That aside, I think Brawn will reward Rubens with victories towards the end of the season when the title is in the bank. Akin to his days at Ferrari. The obvious candidate is Interlagos and also a premier GP like Abu Dhabi.

Maybe none, but that isn't important, as long as he keeps picking up points for Brawn

Rubens isn't a bad driver, he's an excellent #2. Does anyone ever truly seek to be #2 in a competitive sport? Doubtful. Button and Barrichello are extraordinarily consistent drivers with a very well-behaved and quick chassis underneath them. In both Spain and Monaco we saw them drive hard but smart: Brawn split them up in Spain and Button pulled back a bit in Monaco to stay out of additional lapped traffic at the end of the race. I think they make a great team and Rubens seems to be a relatively gracious #2 despite his (and all other 2nd drivers) desire to be #1.

The times are more or less identical until Rubens kills his tyres and then his pace drops away. He did it in Spain and again in Monaco and probably in the earlier races too. They have different styles , Button is much smoother - which also explains why Rubens was able to get a bit more out of last year's dog of a Honda - it needed picking up by the scruff of the the neck & throwing around to get anything out of it & while that is the way Rubens drives, it didn't suit Button.

But with a good, well balanced car like the Brawn, smooth is quick (and saves the tyres!).

NO BIG DEAL - if you watched him during MS tenure you will know that Rubens works well as a team member - perhaps he is happy with helping the Brawn team and his position with the team is to help garner points and not necessarily be the #1 of the team. Some people don't mind the role of "worker bee" instead of "queen bee" and maybe Rubens is one of them. So before you damn him because he "stinks" you might think twice. Ross obviously knows him and perhaps knew that he would be a good candidate to help with positioning the team for a CC rather than taking a chance on "someone new".

sure! As if RB knew at the start of the seison that he would overclass the Mac's and F's.....
My guess is he maintained Rubens position only because Rubens is (one of ?)the most experienced driver(s)

Yep, Rubens did better than Button, "for sure". We shall see how he does the rest of the season.

I'm happy to cover however large a bet you care to make on Rubens finishing ahead of Jenson in the WDC? :D
